ROAD TRIP!
Doctor Strange in: 'The Incredible Drive'
Marvel/Toyota: Yaris commercials
A "MAGIC of VIDEO" Post

---

Coming off of the mammoth, herculean task of orchestrating my Annual SANCTUM AWARDS post and with a lot of big things planned for this blog over the next few weeks (and beyond) I thought it best to toss in a few "lighter" pieces in the interim.

Not that these aren't good posts, but for those who are used to my epic-length dissertations, the next few days will be of briefer (yet awesome) stuff.

To that end, for this weekend, I wanted to present something fun.

This four-part, online-only commercial series for the 2012 Toyota Yaris "It's A CAR!" promo, was a collaboration by TOYOTA and the folks at MARVEL who produce the "WHAT THE--?" stop-motion animated shorts.

Starring; Hulk, Doctor Strange and the Punisher, and featuring Marvel Super Heroes & villains (or at least their Marvel Legends Action Figure equivalent), this series shows them taking part in a road trip to Cleveland - with all the “hilarity” that thus ensues.

Originally begun in November 2011 with monthly installments, I waited until the 4-part series was completed to present it here complete.

While I'm not thrilled with Doctor Strange's treatment here (or in any of his previous "WHAT THE--?" appearances), still, there ARE some good parts.
And look for an AWESOME cameo appearance by MAN-THING in episode two!

I'm presenting these as lower res videos hosted here on my blog, rather than on YouTube, because frankly, while i want to showcase them, I don't need any hassles with "the man" wanting me to take them down, or having my YouTube account shuttered.
However, by placing them here, with some commentary, criticism - AND helping to advertise their respective products, I call into play the "FAIR USE" clause.

The quality here is pretty good, but if you absolutely must see them in sparkling high-res, they can be found on Marvel's and Toyota's pages.

Enjoy!

As I pointed out in my 4th ANNUAL SANCTUM AWARDS [HERE], the first two episodes had the dubious honor of "winning" for "WORST MEDIA APPEARANCE".
(The last two came out in the first two months of 2012, respectively - and as such, will probably be contenders for that self-same "prize" in the 2012 SANCTUM AWARDS.)

While it should be freakin’ awesome for there to be Doctor Strange featured in a national advertising campaign, and one that isn’t utterly terrible (there are a few funny points to each episode), the fact that Doc is portrayed as a whining, irritatingly high-pitched-voiced, annoyance makes me feel that it might be better to not have him involved at all, rather than be so poorly represented (especially as Marvel needs to increase Doc's media Q-rating for any future big-media push... *cough* Feature Film *cough*).

ATTACK of the EAR-WORM!
SHALLOW GRAVY - JACKET!

 ---

"Dey put...tings...in our EARS!!!"
The words of the U.S.S. Enterprise's Pavel Chekov (from; "Star Trek : The Wrath of Khan") are apt.
That is because this song has been playing through my head, non-stop, since I first heard it a few days ago (after it aired as a part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim special presentation of the season opener special for the VENTURE BROS).

I just want to share my madness.

After a mockumentary, 'The Venture Bros.: From The Ladle To The Grave—The Shallow Gravy Story', detailing the "rise and fall and rise and fall and rise" of the teen group; "SHALLOW GRAVY" (Hank Venture and Dermott Fictel - with robot H.E.L.P.eR as a Peter-Criss-make-up-wearing, walking-spider-eyed, drum-machine) we were treated to a music video for the single; JACKET.

All I can say is that I've replayed the damned thing so many times, my ears are bleeding - but I can't stop myself.

I'll embed the video here (FULLY NOTING that it is copyright ADULT SWIM).

And if you like it (which I KNOW you will) download the EP (multiple versions of the song; "Live", unplugged, orchestral, remix and full version - with Explicit lyrics) PLUS the VIDEO (all compatible with MP3 Players (including with iPod®), iTunes, Windows Media Player) from my handy-dandy amazon link:

The Jacket EP (Music From The Venture Bros.) [Explicit] [+Video]

It can also be purchased via iTunes, but it's been so long since I downloaded from them, I don't know if I have an account any longer. So, I'm sticking with the Amazon link.

There IS another reason I am hyping the song/video.
Like most of the VENTURE BROS. productions, it does have appearances by Doctor Orpheus (the Venture-verse's answer to Doctor Strange).
But, in this case, that is a very small reason - because he is only shown in non-speaking, cameo appearances,  and also because.. I just simply LOVE the stupid song!

JACKET!

Yellow Jacket, Strait Jacket, Smoking Jacket, Full Metal Jacket!
Flack Jacket, Leather Jacket, Varsity Jacket, It's Brock's Jacket!
Puffy Jacket, Bullet-Proof Jacket, Track Jacket, a Woolen Jacket!
Dungaree Jacket, Jean Jacket, Denim Jacket, They're all the same jacket!

You are my outer wear. My special coat, without a tear!
Jackets are everywhere.

With a hood, or a belt, or a sleeveless one.
Doesn't count, that's a vest called a Jerkin.
A, 2, 3, 4.

Fonzie's Jacket, Bolero Jacket, Tuxedo Jacket, An Eisenhower Jacket!
Nehru Jacket, Satin Jacket, Riding Jacket, Technicolor Jacket!
Welding Jacket, Child's Jacket, Driving Jacket, Reversible Jacket!
'Members Only' Jacket, Padded Jacket, Fringed Jacket, Double-Breasted Jacket!

These are the coats we wear, of Devil's Plant, and Witches Hair!
Jackets are everywhere.
You are my outerwear. My special coat, without a tear!
Jackets are everywhere.

With a hood, or a belt, or a sleeveless one.
Doesn't count, that's a vest called a Jerkin.
Ahh......we're all wearing jackets...

BEWARE : The IDES of MARCH!
-or-
The EYE(S) of MARCH!
-or-
The FIGHTS of MARCH!

---
Today is March 15th.
The infamous "Ides of March" (Google it if your history class never went over Ancient Rome and the life of Julius Caesar).

But it is ALSO the day that the Downloadable characters are made available for the newly released MARVEL vs CAPCOM3 video game (as blogged previously [HERE]).

This year, to commemorate such a dire and deadly day, let me present for you the dread, destructive and downloadable  DOOM of...

SHUMA GORATH!

As added bonuses (bonusii); allow me to present to you the cameo appearance of other Monsters and Mages...

DOCTOR STRANGE
- and -
The MAN-THING
and the LEGION of MONSTERS...

Man-Thing appears at the end of JILL VALENTINE's story (she being another DLC character).
In the ending, Jill teams up with BLADE; Vampire Hunter to defend against the uncertain threat of
Man-Thing and the Legion of Monsters (Morbius; Living Vampire, Werewolf by Night and Living Mummy).

---

And at the ending for Hsien-Ko, DOCTOR STRANGE is summoned... sorta.

Sadly, it seems as if it isn't REALLY Doctor Strange at all, but an imagined version created by Hsien-Ko in a comic book she created.

*sigh*
The Ides of March have struck again.
Once again the respect for Doctor Strange, by the very company he keeps, has been assassinated.
Et tu, Capcom?

--------------------------------------

No, sadly, I have YET to even look at the game itself.
First off, as I mentioned in the original post [HERE] I don't even own the required video gaming system with which to play the game.
Yes, I bought the game, but purely for the fact that it contains; Shuma Gorath, Dormammu and Doctor Doom as playable characters, as well as cameo appearances by Doctor Strange, Man-Thing, and other faves (Satana, Legion of Monsters, Blade, Iron Fist, Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer and more...)
As well as the sweet Shuma Gorath limited edition t-shirt that came with it.

But, also, I've been so busy with professional projects; called in to work on special projects at my most recent employer, as well as freelance projects for my ex-employer-before-that.
AND two special projects that will be revealed on this blog (which should have been revealed already if not for the aforementioned business keeping me busy).

However, and this wraps up all these points; I am expecting to play this game this coming weekend with my brother - who owns multiple game platforms (my first "official time-off" in a long time, as I will spend time with all of my siblings for a weekend getaway).
Some down-time is required to recharge.

Then, I'll get to post all the entries that have been waiting in the wings these past months.
Good things come to those who wait.
Thanks for waiting.

I NEED to PUNCH Something... NOW!
Marvel vs Capcom3 : Fate of Two Worlds
Quite possibly the GREATEST fighting game ever?

---

* UPDATED *
02-18-2011
More pics, videos and spoilers (labeled)!
---

After a month of waiting, a package arrived at my doorstep (ok, my P.O. Box) and inside was a treasure trove of awesomeness - presenting pleasures, both immediate and promised.

The Limited Collector's Edition of MARVEL vs CAPCOM 3 : Fate of Two Worlds video game!
(I bought the one for the PS3)

With a bonus of an exclusive, Limited Edition SHUMA GORATH "Waste of Flesh" t-shirt (designed by Meat Bun, as I blogged about [HERE] - scroll down to the 01-15-2011 update near the bottom.)

HE WHO SLEEPS BUT SHALL LP, LP, LEFT, HK, HP, UP, UP, DOWN, UP

Available for PS3 and XBOX360, the limited collector’s edition for MvC3 costs $69.99, only $10 more than the standard game, and comes with some sweet extras to delight comic book fans.

Here is what the set includes:

  • Steelbook case featuring exclusive art work.
  • 12-page prologue comic/art book, written by Marvel writer Frank Tieri, plus campaign art and a selection of fan art.
  • A one-month subscription to Marvel Digital Comics.

 and the very BEST part...

  • 2 DLC Characters – Shuma Gorath and Jill Valentine in her Resident Evil 5 battlesuit.
Unfortunately, the DLC characters won't be available until MARCH 15, 2011!
So... I need to WAIT in order to put together my three-character team of:
  • DOCTOR DOOM
  • DORMAMMU
  • SHUMA GORATH

Totally.

Freaking.
Awesome!

Oh, how insane is THAT gonna be?
Three of my all-time favorite baddies, all available for me to control them in order to bring pain to anyone foolish enough to cross me?
Bwa-ha-ha-ha!!!
er.... sorry. Got carried away there.

Here are some screen grabs of SHUMA GORATH (and Jill) the first two DLC characters (and also some DORMAMMU as well).

In Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Shuma-Gorath only appears as a downloadable character, but his moves are as deadly as ever. To send your opponent into a world of dizzying madness, enact his “Chaos Dimension” attack.

“Shuma-Gorath grabs you with his tongue, wraps himself around you, and slides you into a nightmarish portal. It’s spinning, hallucinatory and gives you a taste of what’s going on in the Chaos Dimension, which is where he hails from. And then he spits you out.”
  - so sayeth Seth Killian, Capcom’s special advisor to the game, describing the move.

Check out the pic of THAT!

Now it DOES suck that Shuma Gorath isn't a regular, included character in the game.
Seriously, Shuma Gorath has been featured in video games before - including previous incarnations of this game:
- Marvel Super Heroes
- Marvel SuperHeroes vs Street Fighter
- Marvel vs Capcom2
so why dump him down to the level of DLC?
Instead, reserve that "honor" for more highly desirable characters.
Let's face it, if you're not a huge fan of the Doctor Strange mythos, you probably won't care about Shuma and won't want to have to pay to get him.
But I'm SURE there are other entities that fans would gladly (?) pony up the cash to score.

Still, where Capcom taketh (sorta) they also giveth:
While Doctor Doom is an old veteran of video games, and even Shuma Gorath has appeared in earlier epics, never before has DORMAMMU been seen in a video game, and here he is in full fighting fury!
(as I blogged about months ago [HERE])

Check out the sweet visuals of Dormammu incinerating his opponents!

But you think THAT would be enough to make me squee over the prospect of playing?
Maybe... but no.

Also confirmed are a multitude of other cool CAMEO appearances by many characters near and dear to my heart:
  • BLADE
  • SATANA
  • IRON FIST
  • MEPHISTO
  • SATANNISH
  • GHOST RIDER
  • SILVER SURFER
 And... oh yeah, that's right...

DOCTOR STRANGE!
and
MAN-THING!

Oh, yeah bitches!
While Man-Thing is rumored to appear in the background of some fight scene, Doctor Strange has been CONFIRMED as being seen in "one of the characters ending scenes" (reference found [HERE]).
While it would be far, far better to see Doctor Strange as a playable character, I am glad to see that he is not totally forgotten in this epic.
Especially fitting seeing as how at least two of his deadliest foes (3 if you count Dr. Doom) are prominently featured.

“Every character in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has their own unique ending. That’s something we worked very closely on with Capcom. And Dr. Strange will appear in one of the character’s endings.”
 - promises Chris Baker, manager of licensed games at Marvel Entertainment.

* SPOILER ALERT:
Through a quick web-search, I have uncovered which character's ending, complete with screen-grab, where Doctor Strange appears.
If you WANT to be SPOILED... look for the RED TEXT at the END of this post and then keep scrolling to the very bottom.

---
*IMPORTANT TIME-SENSITIVE NEWS*
You can VOTE for what characters you'd like to be included (as DLC's I'd imagine) via the CAPCOM website - [HERE]
But voting polls CLOSE FEB. 19TH AT MIDNIGHT PST.
You can vote for 3, 4 or 5 characters, so after you read this post... go vote for DOCTOR STRANGE and two to four others.
 ---

Now if THAT isn't enough to get my amygdala humming, what else does this game bring to the table?
  • Innovative graphics and gameplay bring the Marvel and Capcom Universes to life: Powered by an advanced version of MT Framework, the engine used in Resident Evil 5, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 brings beautiful backgrounds and character animations to the forefront.
  • Evolved VS. Fighting System: Wild over-the-top gameplay complete with signature aerial combos, hyper combos and other original systems. The evolved new battle system, the “Team Aerial Combo” takes the exciting mind-reading game to a whole new level!
  • 3-on-3 Tag Team Fighting: Players build their own perfect team as you assign unique Assist Attacks for each character and utilize each character’s special moves to create their own unique fighting style.
  • Living Comic Book Art Style: See the most adored characters from the Capcom and Marvel universes brought to life in a “moving comic” style, blurring the boundaries between 2D and 3D graphics.

GAH!!!
There's only one problem (well... TWO really) with my getting to play this game.

I'll readily admit, that I'm not much of a video game player.
Oh, I WANT to play.
A LOT!

However, grand aspirations aside... I should fess up to the fact that I don't really have the skillz to pull off the multi-button combos required in today's electronic gamefare.

I feel like I'm standing up in some 12-step group meeting for the woefully pitiful game player.
"Hello. My name is Ptor and I am a button-masher."
"Hi, Ptor."

Well, as it turns out, my most recent acquisition feels my pain and Capcom has seemingly designed a game with me in mind. Most early reviews state that this game is designed for the two opposite ends of the gaming spectrum; the super-pro and the button-masher (and not really anyone in-between).

Supposedly, the seizure-inducing multi-combos, while monstrously effective for the advanced player are still dazzlingly awe-inspiring and able to be pulled off by neophytes such as myself.
All to dizzying, pleasure-center throbbing results.

So, I am excited!
Finally, a game where I can do as much damage to my video-game expert younger brother as he does to me.

The main problem?
Well... (he admits sheepishly)... I don't even HAVE the console required to play this game.

Admittedly, I bought it because of the multiple characters included (and the sweet Shuma Gorath shirt) with the foreknowledge that I'll have to either go visit my brother to play or wait for him to come to me - his PS3 game console in tow.

But, those instances will be few and far between (sadly, because I like my brother and enjoy seeing him - as well as desiring to punish him mercilessly with the unmitigated fury of DOOM, DORMAMMU and GORATH!). Also, upsetting because, the DLC can only be downloaded once, and it will forever be accessible ONLY from my bro's game console.

I need to get me a PS3 - stat!
Just as soon as one falls from the sky... or is available cheap.
I've been holding my own with a sporadic stream of freelance jobs (and am in training for another full-time/ part-time job) but funds for frivolous items like video game consoles isn't easy to come by.
;-(

Alas, I am a, as SHUMA GORATH would say (in play)...
"WASTE OF FLESH!"

* SPOILER of which Character's ending where DR. STRANGE appears*

Hsien-Ko
Hsien-Ko and her sister, Mei-Ling, seek the assistance of Dr. Strange to help free their mother from the spirit world, and maybe even return the two of them to human form.

I am unsure if this is animated in any way or is merely a static scene with only scrolling text.
If this is the sum total of Strange's appearance(s), I will be a bit disappointed, but still glad that he wasn't totally left out.

That 70's Show: The Mark of the Man-Thing!
-or-
Ashton Kutcher loves him some Man-Thing.

Readers of this blog may recall that I once posted an entry showing a clip of an episode of THAT 70's SHOW, wherein the character "Michael Kelso", played by Ashton Kutcher, is holding a comic book while talking with his friends.
In that earlier post, the comic in question featured DOCTOR STRANGE.
(See it HERE)

Well... today, I have another clip from THAT 70's SHOW, but this time the comic book featured has a guest-starring role (and cover appearance) by the MAN-THING!

Before I give it away, I'll show the clip so you can check it out for yourself.
(I'll show JUST the few seconds where the comic is featured - so FOX lawyers, cut me some slack. I promise to totally make it worth your while at the end of this post.)

I know it was a little hard to spot, but trust me... that cover, even in motion, leaped out at my eyeballs and smacked me upside my cerebral cortex.
The comic in question was ASTONISHING TALES # 13 (starring Ka-Zar) from 1972. One of the Man-Thing's earliest appearances.

Sadly, the comic is almost always in motion, and as such, getting a clean screen grab was impossible (at least with MY cobbled-together software). Here's something to use as a confirmation comparison.

The words "Ashton Kutcher" and "Man-Thing"are sure to bring some improper web-searches.

Hrmm... first I spot that episode with Doctor Strange on the cover of Amazing Spider-Man, now this Man-Thing appearance... if I EVER spot a ROM comic (or toy) in the background of that show (unlikely, though, since ROM # 1 was a late 1979 release) then 'That 70's Show' will have to be named the best tv show - ever.

---

Hey, FOX legal department! Here's some "pay for play" for letting me use that clip:

That episode; "Punk Chick" is episode # 22 from Season 1 and can be purchased from this very blog (via AMAZON)!
So, hey readers... support your 70's flashbacks with more than just weed and old comics... buy a DVD boxed set today!

That 70's Show : Enter... DR. STRANGE !
-or-
Doc and Spider-Man -vs- Ashton Kutcher - in bed!

I've posted several entries of Dr. Strange being featured, in one way or other, on various TV shows (cartoons, news shows, teen angst shows, etc...) and today I have another to add to that list.

On an episode of THAT 70's SHOW, the character "Michael Kelso", played by Ashton Kutcher, is holding a comic book while talking with his friends.

That comic book featured a guest-starring role by Doctor Strange and he is also featured on the cover.

Before I give it away, I'll show the clip so you can check it out for yourself.
(I'll show JUST the few seconds where the comic is featured - so FOX lawyers, cut me some slack. I promise to totally make it worth your while at the end of this post.)

Ahhhhh!!!!... Did you see how he man-handled that comic?
The episode should have had an "parental guidance" tag for "Violence against Comics"!

The comic in question was AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 109 from 1972.

Strangely enough, they could just as easily used an issue of the reprinted version in MARVEL TALES # 88 from February 1978!

That would still be correct from a continuity standpoint, since the show takes place after the release of Star Wars in 1977 (as evidenced by all the Star Wars mania of Eric Foreman - as played by Topher Grace).

Such a swap would have been especially good because, while the original John Romita Sr. cover is nice, it fails in one major design aspect by having a major character with his BACK facing the reader!
The Marvel Tales version is "corrected", (albeit poorly,) so that Dr. Strange is now front-facing.

Besides, a copy of Marvel Tales # 88 would have been a much cheaper find and would be more acceptable for the kind of rough treatment given by Kutcher/Kelso.
...I'm just saying.

For those of you who came here while searching for some "sexy" images of Ashton Kutcher on a bed (that should bump up the google-search engine tally) here ya go:

That's the male version of a similar scene I featured  with Megan Fox lying half-naked while reading an issue of Doctor Strange (pic [HERE]).

---

Hey, FOX legal department! Here's some "pay for play" for letting me use that clip:

That episode; "Who Are You?" is episode # 15 from Season 6 and can be purchased from this very blog (via AMAZON)!
So, hey readers... support your 70's flashbacks with more than just weed and old comics... buy a DVD boxed set today!

DORMAMMU in Marvel vs Capcom 3

DORMAMMU, one of DOCTOR STRANGE's mightiest and most malevolent mystical menaces has been chosen to be a playable fighter in the new Marvel vs Capcom 3 : Fate of Two Worlds video game.

This is Dormammu's first-ever appearance in a video game, and he seems to have been given top-notch service.

Decked out in the armor he wore in the Keith Giffen / J.M. DeMatteis / Kevin Maguire DEFENDERS series (2005), he has never looked better!

Dormammu appears to have taken the slot previously held by SHUMA GORATH (check him out HERE and HERE); who him/itself was a featured playable character in the previous incarnations of the game:
- Marvel Super Heroes
- Marvel SuperHeroes vs Street Fighter
- Marvel vs Capcom2

I (and many online) am unsure as to why Shuma Gorath was dropped and Dormammu inserted, but it may be that since Dormammu is a higher profile character in the comics (as well as the possibility that if a Doctor Strange film is made Dormammu would be the prime candidate as the baddie), that he would seem to be a more marketable character (since many gamers only know of Shuma Gorath from the previous vid-games - if at all).

Still, check out the sweet visuals of Dormammu incinerating his opponents.

Much like Shuma Gorath before him, the inclusion of Dormammu as a fighting character makes little sense to ANYONE who knows of the character from the comics canon.

Both are nigh-unbeatable immortal demons that don't engage in fisticuffs - preferring to cast insanely powerful spells and enthrall entire worlds (if not dimensions).

However, BOTH of those foes have been handily defeated one-on-one by DOCTOR STRANGE.

While Strange has always defeated Shuma Gorath in purely mystical combat, Dormammu was once defeated in a hand-to-hand battle with Strange (with Doc using Judo and the 'Pincers of Power' back in Strange Tales # 140 - in 1966)!

So, it would seem that having Dr Strange as a playable character would be likely?
Well... sadly No.
Doc has OFFICIALLY been announced as to NOT be in the game.

DOCTOR STRANGE in an AVENGERS "PREMAKE" film.

-------------

Dr. Strange greets thee!
Behold! The Eye of Agamotto!
---

If you're a fan of Marvel comics and/or their comic-inspired films, you have assuredly become immersed by the assorted rumblings about the upcoming AVENGERS film.

You may also have read, heard and/or engaged directly in the inevitable bemoaning of whether it will be faithful to its comic roots and fan-base.
You may further be angst-filled for having to wait several years for it to become a reality.

Well, while you and I have been content to sit on the sidelines and do naught but wonder, one creator has taken it upon himself to actually CREATE a "PRE-MAKE" of the film - to the utter delight of anyone who calls themselves comic-movie fans.

Talented writer/artist/editor/director Ivan Guerrero mixed his love of comics and cinema and combined them, utilizing his obvious skills as an editor and director to thus whip up the stuff of nerd-fantasy.

"AVENGERS - 1952" is a delight of sweet eye-candy, with a center of classic film nuget and a delicious covering of the honeyed nectar of comic-nerd love.

It isn't a "Prequel" as it isn't a prelude to the current film in any way.
It IS an ORIGINAL production... albeit while "borrowing" clips from over 50 old classic films and serials and mixing them with modern film-editing software and a fine director's eye.

In fact "eye" is quite apropos as the director has taken to calling himself "eyevan", and his YouTube channel is named "Who is eyevan" (but all one word; whoiseyevan).

While some may decry the merits of fan-fiction, I challenge ANYONE to find fault or criticize this work.
It is truly the inspired stuff of genius.

With nearly 20 Marvel characters and several classic comic locales interspersed within the film this is a joy to watch again and again just to see how layered the production value goes - classic film mash-up, with comic book roots, rewritten dialogue, new voice-overs and sound effects, digitally enhanced effects and details. Easter egg after Easter egg. Hidden gem after hidden gem.

And, as you have seen from the still shot I placed atop this post, DOCTOR STRANGE makes a glorious (if brief) appearance!

-------------

Doctor Strange meets Captain America
---

A greeting and a spell is cast.
---

Behold! The Eye of Agamotto!
---

Enough delay!
Watch this and enjoy!

(You can also go to "whoiseyevan's" channel and see it - HERE)

Did you catch ALL the assorted comic-themed cameo appearances of characters and locations?
To watch it again in annotated form, (with all the answers laid out for you,) check it out again here.

(or go to the YouTUBE page for it - HERE)

I can only hope the "real" Avengers film is HALF as enjoyable as this!

ANIMATED MAN-THING? (ANI-MAn-ThingED?)

Sheesh... I keep trying to get back on track with some real posts here, and I keep finding more swell news tidbits to post instead. However, since this is more MAN-THING goodness, I'm fine with it.

File under "Easter Egg", I watched the preview trailer for Marvel/Disney's new, upcoming AVENGERS : EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES animated series and in the first few seconds saw THIS.

See that newspaper's front page?
Check out the right side-column EXCLUSIVE story.

Click pic to make Man-Thing "Giant-Sized"

Note: the classic "Bigfoot" film-footage pose. Nice touch.

Yup.
"MAN-like 'THING' stalks upstate!"

Now, don't ask me what Man-Thing is doing in upstate N.Y. (most likely, since I've never heard of any other state having an "upstate") and away from his Florida Everglades home, but as we've seen with recent developments in the comics canon (as reviewed HERE), Manny is now capable of long-range travel, so... anything goes.

Sadly, that seems to be the extent of his "animated" appearance, but it does provide hope for an actual appearance in the show down the road.

This all-new 'Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes' animated series from Marvel Animation premiers on Disney XD this Autumn 2010.

For your convenience, you can check out the trailer here.

I'm not sure how I feel about the overall look and quality of this production.
This is the closest I've seen Marvel get to the quality of DC's animated series, but it's still a bit... "off".
Not sure why most of Marvel's animated output always look so inferior to DC's.
Yes, I know DC has Warner Bros. studios behind them, but this is Marvel-as-backed-by-DISNEY we're talking about.
I'd expect better by now.
Especially with a big-budget series of films about to be unleashed that will feed directly into and from this.

Well, if MAN-THING (or DR. STRANGE) will appear, I'll be more forgiving.

America's Next Top Wizard
-starring Dr Simon Strange? (Stephen Cowell?)

Seen in a very short clip on "UGLY AMERICANS" (season 1 episode 5) - a "copyright liberated" version of Doctor Strange is cast as a judge (dissing a pseudo "Harry Potter" lookalike) on a game-show "America's Next Top Wizard" (episode 23)- (obviously a mash-up of "America's Next Top Model" and "American Idol").

Check out the short clip of his appearance.
(I make no comment on the nature of his manner and behavior.)

"You call this a potion? More like SNOREcery."
"Snap!"

Oddly enough, I take this as an addition to the current expansion of society's exposure to Doctor Strange, and his inclusion into the modern cultural zeitgeist (as I described in this previous post [HERE]).

It's no secret that Strange is a fave of oddball and weirdo artists, as the creator of this animated series, most delightfully must be.

(Thanks go to Howard "wrong dimension boy" Hallis for the find!)

...And now a word from DOOM!
Episode IV

.

Dr Doom once more takes a moment from his busy schedule of planning world domination to impart one word of his magnificent wisdom upon us all.

What shall he say today? *

"Prostitute!"

Sadly, DOOM reveals his inner shame at being reduced to a "BRAND" and shows but a SMALL sample of the merchandise that bears the name and visage of... DOOM!

Those are but a sample of the MANY Dr Doom related articles in my collection, and those two are up for sale on the ol' ebay account - as of this posting (but they'll be gone before too long).

Unfortunately, already having been sold off in month's past are a few other Dr. Doom related items. The most awesome of which was the full-sized Bowen Designs statue (Doom standing atop his castle turret).

(click to make LATVERIAN in size)

as seen in this old "sales pitch post" [HERE]

Yup... Doom IS a megalomaniac, and I guess as such, he expects to have his likeness on many household items...
Check out a previous "Word from DOOM" post to see some others:
A figural MUG as well as a fictional Latverian NOG.
That post [HERE]

But still, it must shame him slightly that such items are being made for mere money and not to further his glory.

...And now a word from DOOM!
Episode III

-

Yet again, Dr Doom takes a moment from his busy schedule of planning world domination to impart one word of his magnificent wisdom upon us all.

What shall he say today?

"NOG!"

--- And now a Commercial Announcement ---

This post brought to you by...

LATVERIAN DOOMSTADT NOG

The ONLY NOG approved by DOOM!

---

- That NOG label could be the worst bit of "Design" I've ever done. Hastily done or not.
If it were an ACTUAL product, it wouldn't be so busy, but as a one-shot prop, it has to have a bunch of elements that might not normally be required. Or at least - laid out better.
But, I'd imagine DOOM's ego being so rampant that ALL Latverian product must require his "seal" of approval upon them, and that seal should take up 1/3 of the top portion of the package and/or label.

- Hmmm... speaking of shoddy-looking... Castle Doom is looking a tad shabby there. Draperies all mussed up and junk.
You'd think that there would be constant clean-up and tidying crews of Doombots (or serfs) who would tend to these things, what with the constant invasions and battles.

Episode II

Once again, Dr Doom takes a moment from his busy schedule of planning world domination to impart one word of his magnificent wisdom upon us all.

What shall he say today?

"SNUGGIE!" *

- This is wrong on EVERY level. **

...And now a word from DOOM!
Episode 1

Dr Doom takes a moment from his busy schedule of planning world domination to impart one word of his magnificent wisdom upon us all.

What shall he say today?

"BAH!"
(humbug!) *

-personally, I like how the credits are longer than the actual vid.
* (and that DOOM feels above the limitations of the "one word" restrictions, thus getting two words in via guile)

MYSTIC GARB : DR. STRANGE APPAREL
- part 2 : SOLO APPEARANCE T-SHIRTS

Welcome back, to this, Part 2 of a series of posts that will seek to catalogue my extensive collection of Doctor Strange (and related 6-Dimensions characters) apparel!

Part 1 of this series:
MYSTIC GARB : DR. STRANGE APPAREL - part 1 : CAPS and TIES
can be found at that link.

Today's installment deals with the meat and potatoes of my Doctor Strange apparel collection - the T-SHIRTS!

However, since I have so darn many of them, I have to divide them all into three groups.

Today is Subsection A : Dr. Strange SOLO Appearances (meaning; shirts that have Dr. Strange and ONLY Dr. Strange on them - and mostly only officially released product. I'm not usually interested in knock-offs or home-made items)!

---

*Note*
LOOK FOR UPDATED ENTRIES
- Placed in chronological order of manufacture and release! -

We'll start off with the very FIRST Dr. Strange T-Shirt design, the classic version drawn by Steve Ditko!

As you'll see in this post, like many of my Dr. Strange shirts, I have two of these.
One (usually a Medium or Large) to wear, and one (usually an XL to get the biggest image possible)... not to wear. (Although, as you can see from the wrinkled nature of the "to wear" ones, I haven't worn them in ages and instead, they've been sitting in a box for a few years.)

Take a spin on the Way-Back Machine and look at one of the first advertisements that ran in some of the Marvel Comics issues in 1965. Amidst the many other Marvel collectible swag, Dr. Strange hawks his own shirt. And it could have been YOURS for $1.50.

Truth to tell, I don't actually own the real, authentic 1965 Marvelmania edition of this item.
Sadly, no. (Nearly every attempt at procuring one ends with the shirt selling for hundreds of dollars - and without winning some sort of lottery, I am unable to justify that.) What I do have is the re-issue that was released in the 1990's by Graphitti Designs.

In the early 2000's they also released the design as a long-sleeve shirt. So, I had to get one of those as well.

*UPDATED ENTRY*

NOTE:
*READ EXCITING UPDATE TO THIS ENTRY
- IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING!*

Next up in this post is something of a "dream" shirt.
Around 1997 or so, whilst flipping channels on the TV, I clicked past a rerun of 1975 - 1984 TV show "One Day At A Time". The show, starring Bonnie Franklin, Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli dealt with a single mother raising her two daughters while juggling career and life.

Not interested in the show, I continued flipping past.
However, JUST before the channel moved past the show, a scene with a young boy speaking to one of the female leads popped onto screen.

I could have sworn that the young actor was wearing a shirt that looked like it had the classic 1980's Dr. Strange comic logo on it!

As fast as I could, I tried to return to the show, but by that time, the scene was ended and the character was gone.

I've whipped up a quick mock-up to show you what I THINK I saw.

The color scheme of the logo might not be accurate in my comp, but it seemed to be THAT logo!
I have been searching for that shirt, or any clue to its existence ever since.

Over a decade has passed since I caught that fleeting glimpse, and not one lead has presented itself.

The show only has a DVD collection for the first season available, with no clue as to when or if the next 8 seasons will ever be released.
With NO idea as to what episode I had stumbled across, from which season, even if I was able to access someone's private collection, that is one hell of a daunting task.

Perhaps someone out there might be able to shed some light on this old mystery.

Either way, it is one of my personal "grail" items - one that I will seek for my collection, either until I find one, or prove that no such item ever existed.

* EXCITING UPDATE!*

While "The Quest" (as I've called it) for long-sought "Grail Items" can take many, many years, with dogged determination, insane detail-oriented search techniques and sometimes... the help of a good friend, the Quest can sometimes be fulfilled.

As it turns out, the shirt DID / DOES exist and not only that...

It's finally mine.

Featuring the classic DOCTOR STRANGE logo which emblazoned the covers of his title from 1974 - 1987, this is not only nearly exactly what I mocked-up in my earlier description, but also the only Dr. Strange shirt to feature this logo at all (wherein all others that DO utilize a logo oft opt for earlier - or later - logos; all inferior to this one).

I'm unsure of the licensee for this one. The label says it's a "Screen Stars" shirt, but Screen Stars were usually just the manufacturer of the blank shirts, and some other company would buy them in bulk and print on them for resale. Was Marvel still releasing their own wares in the mid-1980's?

As can be seen in the close-up / detail photo, the shirt has a copyright date of 1984.
That makes it only the 2nd official Doctor Strange shirt - preceded only by the classic Steve Ditko illustrated shirt from 1965.

It also helps to pinpoint some information about where I saw it - on the "One Day At A Time" tv show. Since the show was cancelled in 1984 - its 9th season, the episode wherein I saw it MUST be one of those final ones. Also helping to narrow it down a bit is that the full cast isn't even in some of those episodes. So, in time, I'll be able to find video of the show and - hopefully - put the clip here alongside the shirt.

To give proper credit where due - it is once again, by the good graces of dear friend, Howard Hallis, that this uber-rare Doctor Strange garment finds its way into the magical wardrobe in my Sanctum. (This is the third uber-rare shirt Howard has either kindly stepped aside to allow me to acquire or obtained for me;  the others were: the "Marvel Picnic" shirt, and the "Stussy" Dr. Strange shirt - both seen later in this post.
Howard... THANK YOU!)

---

After the 1965 Ditko shirt, the earliest solo shirt to actually show Dr. Strange was this one released in 1987.

The image is from a pin-up with artwork by famed illustrator, Bill Sienkiewicz.
Also a "Screen Stars" shirt (the manufacturer of the "blank" shirt), the print company is unknown to me.

---

While Doctor Strange would appear in other shirts in the interim, his next solo appearance was this shirt from 1995 produced by COMIC IMAGES.

For the sake of completeness in this catalogue, I'll also show the packaging for the items that I have still "NRFB" (Never Removed From Baggie).

The artwork is taken from a rough draft of the cover of Doctor Strange; Sorcerer Supreme # 76 by artist Peter Gross. During this time in his "life", Marvel sought to make Strange more appealing to younger readers and thus gave him this extreme makeover. As you can see, the face and hair of Stephen Strange was cleaned up quite a bit from the version shown in the shirt.

As a pure nerdgasm moment, I want to mention that I own the original artwork (color airbrush work) for this cover. It's a powerful piece in real life. Very rich colors. One of my favorite covers.

---

This was a red-hot time for Dr Strange apparel because within several months there would be more T-shirt love than any other time in his career.
Aside from a few "team-up" shirts (which we'll look into in our next installment - tomorrow) there were a few more "solo" tees released in rapid succession.

Very shortly thereafter, (within a few months) that "Kid Strange" look was tossed out and Marvel retooled Strange yet again, updating him as an urbane metrosexual for this late 1995 shirt.

Once again produced by Comic Images, who had the Marvel license then, this shirt is a representation of the comic art by Marc Buckingham for
Doctor Strange; Sorcerer Supreme # 80.

---

Within a few months of the previous shirt, in early 1996, Marvel and Comic Images released this next one.

With artwork by Joe Madureira, this illustration was taken from a Dr. Strange guest-appearance in the pages of Uncanny X-Men # 329.

Uncanny X-Men # 329
(Joe Maduriera - artist /Scott Lobdell, Jeph Loeb - writers)
info found [HERE] on the GCD

This was a two-part story, and the following issue also produced a Doctor Strange image that would become its own shirt. However, it is a TEAM-UP illustration, and as such will be one of those we look at in tomorrow's installment.

*UPDATED Sept-02-2010*
- NEW ENTRY! -
Next is this nearly one-of-a-kind shirt from
MARVEL CHARACTERS (in-house) - 1996

I say "nearly-one-of-a-kind" because, as you'll soon understand, there were probably several of these made, but not many (if any) others are around today.

It was printed "in-house" at Marvel (or at least directly FOR Marvel, perhaps by one of their licensees, like Comic Images) for the express purpose of being the OFFICIAL shirt worn at the Marvel company PICNIC in 1996!

Wait!? What the heck is THAT?!?
OK. That's a tongue-in-cheek version of "EGO - the Living Planet" on the front depicted as "Ego - The Living PICNIC". Check it out.

Although, THIS is what EGO really looks like.

But that's not WHY it's in my collection. Oh, Heavens, No.
I have it because what is on the BACK of the shirt is this image...

"By the Salaminous Buns of Poupon!"
DOCTOR STRANGE conjuring forth some eats while wearing a Bar-B-Que bib!

"I want a hamburger... no, cheeseburger. I want a hot dog..."

The artwork for this shirt is obviously done specifically FOR this occasion by artist KELLEY JONES. His style is unmistakable.
It is odd that Jones would have drawn this since, by 1996 he was almost exclusively working for DC, only drawing a few Ultraverse and Marvel / Malibu crossovers as well as a few Marvel covers here and there.

What is also odd is that Strange is shown in his traditional garb (bib, notwithstanding) instead of the "new romantic" look he had at the time, as evidenced by the previous shirts shown above.

Stranger yet is that by summer of 1996 Doctor Strange's title had just been canceled!
Here was a character without a home, so to speak, so, I guess it made sense for him to be hanging out in Central Park grubbing food from Marvel bullpenners.

---

The next solo shirt would be more than a year since the one previous. By 1997 the t-shirt license was passed onto GRAPHITTI Designs. and this shirt was released, bearing the artwork of P. Craig Russell.

This image originated as the back cover image to this:
The "What is it That Disturbs You, Stephen?" graphic novella by P. Craig Russell.
Essentially, P.Craig Russel's magnum opus for Dr. Strange.

Fun Factoid
: The story in that deluxe edition was reworked, nearly panel for panel, from P.C.R.'s much earlier work found in Doctor Strange Annual # 1.

---

Not until 1999 would the next Doctor Strange "themed" solo shirt be released.
This time bearing not an image of the good Doctor himself, but instead, a variation on the "demonic" symbol that emblazons his tunic.

Produced by Graphitti, this design was created by Tony Harris for the
Doctor Strange; Flight of Bones
mini-series.
Some info on that series [HERE]
This iconographic symbol was only used in one other body of work, for the original SENTRY mini-series event.
Some info on that series [HERE]
What complicated matters was that while it was colored RED (as seen on this short) in the "Flight of Bones" series, it was colored light blue (like Doc's original design) in "Sentry".
While it was seen on a few "HeroClix" toys of Doctor Strange, afterwards, the design was nearly ignored by future artists, and variations of Strange's classic "demon" symbol would return.

***UPDATE / CORRECTION***
As seen in the comments section, comics scribe ROB WORLEY wrote in and reminded me that this symbol was also used in the (sadly, aborted by Marvel) Young Ancient One tale as seen (only) in EPIC Anthology # 1 from 2004.
There was also a VERY COOL mail-in offer for free Y.A.O. tattoos, which bore the symbol.

Needless to say, I gots me some of those.
The "YAO" website addy is no longer valid,
but the thanator.com part is, and is the home of Rob's works.

---

This next shirt was something of a mystery to me. Still is, really - because it is the only one like it that I have ever seen.
It's an official release, but was an early production of the newest Marvel license-holder; "MAD Engine", and was seemingly available in limited quantities around 2005 or 2006.

The printing style is "distressed", which was / is fairly popular - although, truthfully, I am not a fan of "pre-damaged" print jobs. Luckily, the distressed nature of this piece isn't excessive.

The artwork, by Steve Rude, was among some of the character designs that he had drawn for use with licensed ancillary products.

Aside from this shirt, this pose was used for a few other items, a small representation of which is in a giant Marvel Universe group poster (but, sadly, he's barely a dot on the far horizon), also the Doctor Strange "Battle Dice" figure, as well as the promotional poster for the Marvel Legends "Galactus Series" assortment. An excellent piece of work (as are ALL of Steve Rude's works) this design seems to be "last year's model" and has seemingly been discontinued from Marvel's licensing.

---

Personal factoid: I discovered the existence of this shirt while doing one of my usual internet searches for any and all things Strange - and came upon a curious YouTube video.

In the video, a guy was wearing this shirt, one that I had never seen before, and he was involved in some wrestling match while wearing it (and seemingly calling himself Dr. Strange).
I was transfixed. A shirt that I had never seen. A design that I could not place. A lead with only the slightest of clues.
I HAD to find that shirt.
For several months I hunted down any leads that I could find about the shirt or the image that it bore. After scouring nearly my entire comic collection to find that image - scouring to no avail - I eventually decided to try and make contact with the dude in the vid.

It took over a year of on again, off again attempts, but eventually, we were able to make a deal.
Luckily, the shirt had only been worn a few times, was in excellent condition and was freshly laundered by the time I received it.

Even though this post is quite nearly a full year since I told him I'd hope to feature it on the blog, allow me to present the video that led me to this shirt.

Presenting: Mike, aka; "Sunshine", aka; Owen Blaze.
Professional student, free spirit, drunken wrestler.

Like several items in my collection, there are MANY knock-off / bootleg shirts out there that feature Marvel characters. I've seen several Dr. Strange shirts over the years that I passed on because they were merely "OK", and since they weren't official, I could walk away.

This next one, while being a bootleg, is of very nice quality, but also features my all-time favorite comic book cover:

DOCTOR STRANGE # 169

Artwork by Dan Adkins to what is my favorite comic book cover OF. ALL. TIME.
DOCTOR STRANGE (first series) # 169.
Essentially, Doctor Strange # 1
(Marvel's rules of publishing made it easier for titles to just carry older numbering over than start at a new number 1 - something unheard of today)

No need to show the actual cover since it is right there on the shirt.
However, info on that short-lived series can be found [HERE].

*UPDATED Jan-09-2011*
- NEW ENTRY! -

Next is a shirt that reproduces one of my all-time favorite Doctor Strange covers.
A NEW shirt, manufactured and sold, from late 2010, as an online exclusive from MIGHTY FINE, it is a reproduction of the cover to:
Doctor Strange; Master of the Mystic Arts # 4.

 detail of artwork

Despite appearances, it is NOT an actual reproduction, but a re-drawing of the famous cover art by fan-favorite artist Frank Brunner.
Check out the differences in line quality and technique.
It's almost as if a Spanish or Filipino-style artist (like Alex Niño) inked over Brunner's pencils.

Below is the cover art original with Frank Brunner artwork.
 artwork by Frank Brunner

Why the Mighty Fine shirt company felt the need to redraw the artwork is unknown.
Suffice it to say, it is STILL 100% awesome!

My only complaint? And it is a minor one... the use of the 1960's / 1990's Dr. Strange logo.
It's my least favorite of all of the Doctor Strange logos.
I would have been thrilled if they had used the 1970's style logo present on the comic.

---
*UPDATED Jan-09-2011*
- NEW ENTRY! -

Next up, another late 2010 release, this time from IMPACT MERCHANDISE, sees the reproduction of an old-school Doctor Strange image.

I am not opposed to the use of the 1960's Doc logo on THIS shirt, since that was the logo that would grace covers on that title (although not yet on the issue from whence the image originated.)

With artwork by Dan Adkins, this image is originally from the pages of Doctor Strange v1 # 171.

However, having been reworked in 1971 as a black light poster, post card and jigzaw puzzle by THIRD EYE productions, it is from THIS incarnation that the image was taken for use on this shirt.

And we all have a certain friend to thank for this being made manifest:
Howard Hallis; artist, bon-vivant and Dr. Strange fan of the Nth degree, was contacted by the company because they saw an image of the print on the website for his personal collection.
Asking him to provide a high-resolution scan of the piece scored him some free shirts.
(Of which, he was fabulous enough to score for me as well! - Thanks Howard!)

*UPDATED Oct-09-2011*
- NEW ENTRY! -

Continuing the tradition of Doctor Strange "solo" shirts, is this shirt that is something of a rare item, due to several factors - all of them mildly annoying.
Produced as a LIMITED EDITION SERIES of shirts, renowned indie clothing brand; STUSSY, grouped many underground artists with their favorite MARVEL characters for the STUSSY x MARVEL project. Hosting an impressive assembly of talent, including the likes of; Will Sweeney, David Shrigley, Bill Plympton, Gary Panter, John K., James Jarvis, Todd James, Mister Cartoon and Noah Butkus, working on such characters as; Doctor Strange, Captain America, Silver Surfer, Human Torch & Crystal, The Thing, Ghost Rider, Punisher, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Mystique, She-Hulk and others, the STUSSY x MARVEL project produced a couple of waves of product in April and May of 2011, and all items were available only via ordering from Stussy and only for a very limited time.

This first item is the DOCTOR STRANGE shirt showcasing a design by Noah Butkus.

"Oh, man... I shouldn't have jokingly ordered 'magic mushrooms' on my pizza."

Doctor Strange- meditating in the lotus position, conjuring the Stussy logo amidst demonic creatures.
My shirt is on a plain white tee.
Other color choices included green, blue, red and black.

Printed on the inside along the bottom seam is this code that dates the garment to April 16, 2011 (a week after my birthday) - along with the Stussy logo and all designed to emulate the old Issue/ Comics Code Autority box from nearly every Marvel comic in the 1980's.

One "strange" thing about this shirt is that the really cool image of Dr. Strange is ON. THE. BACK of the shirt. So if you're like me, and wear an open, unbuttoned button-down shirt (long or short sleeve) over a tee, no one can see the design on the back.
THIS photo here is of the FRONT of the shirt, which only displays a small, newly designed "logo" on the left breast.

One of the aforementioned "annoying" factors of the Stussy x Marvel project is that many of these shirts also came in an assortment of shirt colors.
Thus, if you are a nerdy, completist collector-monkey, like myself, you would find yourself hard-pressed (and broke) if you tried to get one in each shirt color.

Still, I'm not THAT bad with my mania (much... anymore...) and am quite content to be MORE than satisfied with my single acquisition. ESPECIALLY, since it came to me as a gift of sorts, from my dear friend, and fellow Doctor Strange fan / collector - Howard Hallis!

Turns out Howard is a well-known Doctor Strange fan over on the West Coast, and he was tapped to dress up as Doctor Strange for the launch party for these shirts.

 "The Stussy Avengers"

So, when they presented him with this shirt as a gesture of thanks (and also as his payment?) he was magnanimous enough to send it to me since he knows my Doc-garment collection is 2nd-to-none. Not to worry friends of fairness and barter-system buddies, as I promised Howard a special garment in exchange (something that will be revealed here in a forthcoming post).

(Thanks again, Howard! - and check out Howard in costumed-action on "G4's Attack of the Show" as they cover the Stussy launch party [HERE])

 ---------

With the exception of the last couple of officially released shirts, there doesn't seem to have been any more recent "solo" shirts for Doctor Strange.
Until his return to the role of Sorcerer Supreme - or a movie deal - that status might not change any time soon.

There HAVE been some new Doctor Strange "solo" shirts as of late, and they will be presented here - in an update - soon!

He has also been featured quite a lot, and fairly prominently, in recent years, on more than a few shirts of a "TEAM-UP" nature.

It is those that we shall look into when we come back tomorrow for the 3rd installment of this series:
