MYSTIC GARB: DOCTOR STRANGE APPAREL
- ANCILLARY ACCESSORIES: ARTIFACTS of FLAIR
Part 1: PATCHES of POWER

-----

One of the longest-running series of blog posts on this Sanctum Sanctorum Comix blog is of my showcase of DOCTOR STRANGE related apparel (hats, ties, shirts, unmentionables…), and in a recent entry into that series, a few weeks ago, I showed a Custom-Made Dr. Strange themed baseball cap (seen [HERE]).

The differing aspect of that article of clothing from the others is that it was made from other “Ancillary Artifacts” which were of a Dr. Strange theme – namely; PATCHES.

And at the time I mentioned that that post also began a new series of posts which will feature assorted Ancillary Accessorizing Artifacts; patches, buttons and assorted bling.
Well, THIS is the first of those new series’ (sub-series?) of posts dealing with Accessories of a Doctor Strange (and “6-Dimensions”) theme.

The best way is to go chronologically, by manufacture – and broken-down by type (you’ll see, there’ll be a reason for my OCD-stylings).

---

First up, 1977 brought us Iron-On patches manufactured by HOLM PATCHES (Made in the USA).

These were 2” x 3” cloth patches which featured logos of then-popular Marvel Comics titles embroidered thereupon.
I say “cloth” but they have a plush feel, more like a quality felt, velour or velvet than a standard fabric.
I have ones for THE DEFENDERS and HOWARD THE DUCK, who many may forget was a sales and cultural phenomenon in the mid-to-late 1970’s.

As you can see, the stitching wasn’t bad, and the accuracy of the logos was spot-on. Simply labeled as “PATCHES”, their packaging and presentation was set at zero, however, as the patches were affixed to a basic no-frills card by means of a single staple.

Other such patches were made, I’m sure, but these tend to be fairly rare and thus, I’ve hardly seen many others.

Strangely enough, there doesn’t seem to have ever been one for DOCTOR STRANGE made by HOLM.
I would have to imagine that the company requested from Marvel a list of their top-selling titles, and while Howard the Duck was an extremely popular (if surprising) seller, and the Defenders – with the roster which included the HULK as well as many other “not-quite-top-tier” characters (like Dr. Strange) would have boosted its sales figures, Doctor Strange’s solo title must not have made the cut.

---

That was rectified in 1979, when RAINBOW EMBLEM CO. of Dallas, Texas (also Made in the USA) produced a series of Marvel Comics patches with embroidered logos of several comic titles, including one for DOCTOR STRANGE; Master of the Mystic Arts.

Made of cloth and sized 2.5” x 3.5”, these Sew-On patches seemed to be more concerned with peg-hook presentation than quality of product. Complete with a dynamic “SUPER-HERO PATCHES” logo on a blister card, RAINBOW’s packaging was nicer than that of HOLM products’, but their patches were abysmally sub-standard.

Take a look at the Doctor Strange patch. The “name” part of the logo isn’t bad at all, but the “Master of the Mystic Arts” sub-header looks to be the work of Rumplestiltskin on a drunken bender.

The material of the patch is more like a flimsy canvas or cheap, colored denim.
Similarly poor patches were made for characters like the HULK and SILVER SURFER (who each actually had a small figure of themselves stitched thereupon).

---

There were some other Marvel-themed patches in 1980, but since I’ve never seen any that were Doctor Strange related (or any of my particular “6-Dimensions” preferences) I’ve not needed to acquire any.

---

The next time we would see Doctor Strange related, Marvel-themed sew-on patches was 1984 (and continued for a few years, until 1986 [or 1987]) when Marvel got into it themselves - teamed with TRANSCOLOR Inc.

This time, it wasn’t logos embroidered onto a patch, but actual artwork from the comics, printed on a fabric base.

“Marvel Super-Heroes TM Patches” were suddenly a thing perhaps less likely to be sewn onto a jean-jacket and more likely left in the clear baggie with hang tag which it came in – as a collectible.

The sheer number of these found over the past few decade or so on sites such as eBay has proven that they were mass-produced, carefully stored, and featured a plethora of the then-active Marvel characters. (Seriously, they featured just about everyone and anyone. There’s even one featuring “HEATHER” McDonald-Hudson – wife of Vindicator/Guardian of the Canadian team; Alpha Flight. She’s not in her “Guardian” suit, which she would later wear, but simply dressed in civvies, diving into the waters by a pier, taken from a panel of John Byrne-drawn issue). Before the end of production in 1986 (or 1987?) they had printed nearly any and every Marvel character on one, using artwork from whatever comics were released during that time-frame.

Most are 4” circular patches, but some are in triangular, shield or other squared-off shapes.

I have several, and am still in the market for a few more.
Currently, I have:

DOCTOR STRANGE: head-shot.

Made in 1984, this is a head/bust as drawn by Paul Smith (inked by Joseph Rubenstein) – and taken from Strange’s bio-page in the “Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe” v1 # 3.
I have two (2) of this one.

DOCTOR STRANGE: action pose.

Made in 1985 this was taken from the cover of “DOCTOR STRANGE: Master of the Mystic Arts” # 69, drawn by Bret Blevens (inked by Mundelo).

DOCTOR DOOM: Bust

Made in 1984, this pose of the Lord of Latveria was drawn by John Byrne and taken from the cover to Fantastic Four # 247.

There’s one of the Scarlet Witch, as drawn by Sandy Plunkett, that I am hoping to make mine one day, but in the meanwhile I DO have some others, including one featuring the Scarlet Witch.

*UPDATE*
GOT IT!

... and here are those others I mentioned.

VISION & SCARLET WITCH – action pose.
1986 – drawn by George Perez.

S.H.I.E.L.D. – logo.
1985 - ‘nuff said.

CLOAK and DAGGER – action pose.
1985 – drawn by Rick Leonardi / Terry Austin

BLACK KNIGHT – action pose.
1986 – by John Buscema / Tom Palmer

GARGOYLE – action pose.
1985 – drawn by Don Perlin.

This series of patches seems to have been the last gasp of the “comic character patch” fever. None since then were “officially” produced. However, as I stated earlier, there are so many of these patches still in circulation, if you have a favorite character, and if they were active during 1984-1987, there’s a good chance you can find a patch that features them.

---

Now, I said “none since then were ‘officially’ produced”, but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been a bunch of “pirate” patches since then!

With the onset of affordable, personal patch stitching machinery, almost anyone can become a Patch-Producer from the comfort of their own home.
I have purchased patches from just such providers… periodically.
Here are some of the current additions to my collection:

DOCTOR STRANGE – head.

4.5” x 3.5” - Taken from the same Paul Smith illustration as the Marvel Patch shown above, this, like most of my modern patches is from a vendor found online. (This, and the next two patches are the patches shown on my Custom Cap post [HERE].)

DOCTOR STRANGE – TV Movie Logo.

3” circle - Taken from a screen still from the 1978 Made-for-TV movie-pilot, this patch is most likely taken from my own image of same, uploaded to the internet back in 2008 for this very blog.

DOCTOR STRANGE – EYE of AGAMOTTO

3” circle - Taken from many an online pic, most likely from Marvel’s own wiki. Drawn by Kevin West (inked by Steve Montano), and taken from the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY # 32 From 1993. Sadly, there are SO many better drawn images of the Amulet of Agamotto, that it is a shame that this patch-maker didn’t seem to locate one of them.

DOCTOR STRANGE – Action pose.

4” x 3” - Taken from artwork from the ULTIMATE MARVEL vs CAPCOM 3 video game, this patch is taken from one of the variant costumes shown for Doctor Strange.
This is a different seller than the previous three, and the quality is poorer.

However, the next one, from the seller of the first 3 bootleg patches knocks it all out of the park.

DOCTOR STRANGE – Full Figure pose.

Measuring a whoppingly, Brobdingnagian 12” high by 5.5” wide, this patch is of the full image that two other “head” patches have used from Paul Smith’s illustration from the ‘Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe’. Here, I have it next to a Paul Smith drawn issue of Doctor Strange – merely for size comparison.
This patch would be something that you'd sew onto the back of your jacket in lieu of a painting of Winged Icarus from a Led Zeppelin album.

---

Of course, the fact that Marvel and their official licensing partners have stopped making patches doesn’t mean that they’ve really stopped making patches… officially.

In 2012, Upper Deck Trading Cards teamed with Marvel to produce a sub-division of that year’s “Marvel Premier” series.
Dubbed; “Classic Corners”, these deluxe trading cards are essentially embroidered patches of comic book artwork that used to be featured on comic book cover “corner boxes”, mounted inside an extra-thick casing.

Of course, I had to get at least two of these rare inserts.

 # CC-14 – which features the corner box artwork for THE DEFENDERS # 1
Doctor Strange, Namor and the Hulk

And

#CC-34 – which features the corner box artwork for ADVENTURE INTO FEAR # 10
The first comic issue that featured The MAN-THING (although, not his first appearance).

I do have a mind to get another of each of these and crack them out of their clear plastic shells to expose the embroidered patches within.

---

Lastly, I’d like to show something that bridges both the fabric patch and trading card genres:
Backstage Access Passes for the band: The GRATEFUL DEAD!

Made of fabric (like a patch) with an adhesive backing (so you could stick them on your jacket – like  a patch), and roughly the size of a trading card, Marvel characters were lithographed onto them to designate for which particular concert they were to be used. I’ve seen several of these over the years, all featuring many different characters, and am happy to have been able to acquire these two…

THE ANCIENT ONE

 (artwork by Carl Potts)
Made for the March 29th, 1995 concert at “The Omni” in Atlanta Georgia.

and

DOCTOR STRANGE

(artwork by Steve Lightle)
Made for the April 4th, 1995 concert  at the Jefferson-Birmingham Civic Coliseum) in Birmingham Alabama.

---

Hmmm… this post was an entry that was a follow-up on a post which in itself was a multi-subject entry (gifts, apparel, patches) and this, too, is a multi-subject entry (patches, trading cards, access passes, the Grateful Dead), but those other threads will have to wait for another day (although, I can guarantee the Grateful Dead subject thread will feature some really cool stuff  [and it, itself, is yet another multi-subject thread]).

HAPPY ST. VALENTINE's DAY from
DOCTOR LOVE: CUPID SUPREME

DOCTOR STRANGE – Master of the Mystic HEARTS

Dr. Strange says;
"You don't need a little blue pill. Just click any pic to make it larger."

---

With today being St. Valentine’s Day, it’s time to, once again, look into the romantic life of our favorite Mystic Master. People tend to call it “Valentine’s Day” and forget that it’s a day named after a man (well, there were actually several “St. Valentine’s" and no one is 100% sure which of them did what exactly, but at least  one of them was a man who)… was granted Sainthood for being martyred due to conducting secret marriages in defiance of Roman Emperor Claudius II. Thus, I thought it would be appropriate to highlight an instance when Dr. Strange risked his life in the course of true love.

However, since the day isn’t named after a horn-dog lothario like Don Juan, but instead St. Valentine, who was a man who helped others unite (giggety), we’ll not look at how Doctor Strange got his heart on, (giggety) [as I did in this old post {HERE},] but instead aided other young lovers, torn apart by the iron grip of a harsh regime.

In AVENGING SPIDER-MAN # 8, by writer(s) Ty Templeton & Dan Slott and artist Matt Clark, we find that Dr. Strange had the Princess Lenka of Symkaria, who is bestowed with high-mystic-potential (she’s the 7th daughter of a 7th daughter [yes, like a Biblical prophecy, Sinbad the Sailor, or Iron Maiden]) to be raised in secret, but now that she is 21, her father (who doesn’t believe the mystic mumbo jumbo) traded her to Doctor Doom as a peace offering between Symkaria & Latveria.

Strange hired Silver Sable to sneak the princess out of her country before the wedding to Doom (since Doom would do nasty things to her [no not THAT!, get your minds outta the gutter] in order to steal her mystic energies or whatnot).
Doctor Strange instructs that for the mystic energies to be safe, the princess must marry someone she loves, so, Doctor Strange and Silver Sable want to pay Spider-Man to be the new husband (since the princess has seemingly had a crush on him for the past 6 years), but Doom is not about to lose what “is his”.

Of course, it turns out that she doesn’t really love Spidey, she just thought he’d stand a better chance against Dr. Doom than her real love; Marek (a pastry boy in her father’s castle).

This is when Doctor Strange then reveals that actual LOVE is imperative in this “special marriage” because it must be consummated – physically (y’know… that stuff you thought Dr. Doom was going to do to her. Yowza!).

So, Strange is totally pimping love and looking every inch the part in his classic duds and porn ‘stash.

But it isn’t all hearts and flowers here… Doctor Strange (and, y’know… Silver Sable & Spider-Man) have to battle against a pent-up Doctor Doom, in order for the young lovers to get secretly married in the basement safe at their Embassy and then… have Marek shoot his “cupid’s arrow” into Lemka’s… oh, you know what.

Despite Doom’s mopping the floor with them, the battle between Doom and the heroes is only stopped when Doom realizes that the newly married royal couple have… um… royally coupled.

It is then that the Doctor of Love... Doctor Strange knows that his work here is done.

With that, we here at the
SANCTUM SANCTORUM COMIX BLOG
would like to extend to you a St. Valentine's Day poem...

*ahem*

ROSES ARE RED.
VIOLETS ARE BLUE
BE WARY YOUNG LOVERS
AGAMOTTO's EYE MAY BE WATCHING YOU.

SMACK DOWN with DOCTOR STRANGE
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 PREVIEW

While it was hardly a secret, (since the news was leaked a month ago - as I blogged [HERE]), Capcom and Marvel have made it OFFICIAL:

DOCTOR STRANGE
is a fighter in
ULTIMATE MARVEL vs CAPCOM 3

(And anyone who has been following my Twitter feed would have noted that I hinted at posting this particular post on the 17th... but alas... between stuff and power outages... well... I suck.)

It's also no secret that I (and many other fans of the Master of the Mystic Arts) couldn't be happier!
With already built-in characters; Dormammu, Doctor Doom and downloadable Shuma-Gorath, it is only fitting that their heroic counterpart be given the chance to square off against them.

(It also makes me wish that I could play video games more than as just a button-mashing newbie.)

But, I'm not going to pontificate all that much in this post.
(I DO have some positive comments and as well as some negative review point, but I'll leave those to the end.)

Instead, I'm going to let the pictures (and VIDEOS) speak their 1,000 words!

SPELL of the VISHANTI! Final Finishing Move

The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu!

Doctor Strange : Master of the MARTIAL Arts!

Seven Rings of Raggadorr!

Hosts of Hoggoth! Final Finishing Move.

As awesome as the still shots are, nothing can prepare you for being able to see Doctor Strange in ACTION!

From what I could gather, Strange calls upon many of these various named spells, to differing effect (see vids for specifics)

Attacks

  • Impact Palm: Strange hits the opponent with a force palm attack, and leaves the opponent in a crumple state.
  • Flames of the Faltine: Strange fires a green fireball.
  • Mystic Sword: Strange slashes the air with blue shockwave projectiles. Low version fires straight ahead, medium fires at a 45 degree angle, and heavy is a series of short-range slashes.
  • Grace of Hoggoth: A floating orb appears in front of Strange. These come in both yellow and red colors, and hang stationary in the air, even when Strange isn't on the field (Though they dissipate if he is knocked out). There can be up to three on screen at a time. These orbs act as a path for his Flames of the Faltine fireball. When the fireball is released, it heads straight for the nearest orb, and if there is more than one, it will travel to the others before heading toward the opponent. For each orb that the fireball travels to, the stronger it becomes. Having the fireball travel through specific orb color combinations produces different projectiles, making this move somewhat similar to Dormammu's Power of the Creator/Destructor.
    • 1 Yellow Orb:
    • 2 Yellow Orbs:
    • 3 Yellow Orbs: A purple beam that leaves the opponent in a crumple state.
    • 1 Red Orb: The fireball grows stronger and brighter.
    • 2 Red Orbs: An even stronger fireball.
    • 3 Red Orbs:
    • 2 Yellow Orbs, 1 Red Orb
    • 2 Red Orbs, 1 Yellow Orb
    • 1 Yellow Orb, 1 Red Orb: The fireball turns yellow and becomes faster.
  • Illusion: A counter move in which Strange disappears and reappears behind his attacker.
  • Teleport: A simple teleport move. Light attack teleports behind the opponent, medium teleports above them, and heavy teleports towards the ground if Strange is airborne.
  • Bolts of Balthakk: Strange fires two bolts of green lightning out of his hands.
  • Eye of Agamatto: A glowing sphere of yellow light appears in front of Strange. He can attack this sphere with Impact Palm to make it move. The opponent can cause it to dissipate if they attack it before Strange can get it moving. The orbs disappears if Strange doesn't hit it within two seconds after summoning it.
  • Disks of Denak: Strange creates floating disks that remain stationary for a moment, before homing in on the opponent.

Hyper Combos

  • Seven Rings of Raggadorr: A Counter Hyper. Strange fires a large beam of blue lightning.
  • Spell of Vishanti: Strange pulls out his book of magic, and a large pillar of yellow lightning strikes the opponent.
  • Astral Magic (Level 3): Strange releases his astral form which wraps the opponent in a mystic restraint, and reforms with Strange. Strange concentrates his magic, and the opponent is then surrounded by yellow orbs, which envelop the opponent in a massive pillar of yellow lightning.

My favorite bit is the ASTRAL MAGIC spell. A visual treat, with astral energies swirling all around in a cascading whirlwind of magic.

However, for sheer nerdgasm thrills, the VERY best part is his signature departure from the battle field after winning; he casts a spell that forms the sigil that is his window design and uses is as a teleport glyph.
PURE AWESOME!

All in all, as far as the physical dynamics of Strange's battle technique and the visual representation of his spells, I am most pleased. I might offer some different spell combos and visual effects to be more akin to his published history, but truthfully, that's only because I'm a Doctor Strange nerd of the Nth degree.

I'll gladly play Doc as presented and be thrilled to do so.

Doc even talks some smack. Here are a few of the catch-phrases he says in the game:

"A novice of the Mystic Arts could defeat you."
—Spoken before a match.

"One does not require the Eye of Agamotto to see this outcome."
—Spoken before a match.

"The Ancient One would be most pleased."
—Spoken upon victory.
"I AM the Sorcerer Supreme, after all."
—Spoken upon victory.

My only "negative" comments are few in number and minor of importance:

- Capcom screwed up his cloak. The gold embroidered area on his cowl is wrong.
But I already bitched about that last time - as I blogged [HERE])

- Why is his voice so... effete? He should be creepy in a spooky way. Or at least a "commanding" presence. Not sound like a pompous Maitre D.

And... that's it.
Those two things are the only negative points that I have.

The very fact that ULTIMATE MARVEL vs CAPCOM 3 has Doctor Strange in all his magical, mystical, majesty, I totally give a pass to Capcom for re-releasing this game within the same year as its original incarnation.

Sadly, I still don't have a game console to play this game (the last platform that I acquired was the Wii, and have only played my copy of the Marvel vs Capcom 3 : Fate of Two Worlds game on my brothers PS3 once, during a holiday visit), but I am STILL going to pre-order the hell out of this game (in the hopes of getting a PS3 some time in the not-too-distant future)!

Release date: November 15th, 2011
$39.99

An early wish for a HAPPY THRASH-GIVING!
DR STRANGE a playable fighter in U MvCC3!

Frustrated by the current economy...
Irritated by the stupidity and childishness of Washington Congress...
Want to punch someone in the face as a release for all this pent-up hostility...

(Anger... rising!)

But, Lo! There has come a reason to be thankful this Thanksgiving... the gift of THRASH!

While it was announced at the San Diego Comic Con that there is going to be, in November 2011, a re-release of the recent MARVEL vs CAPCOM3 : The FATE of TWO WORLDS game - rebranded as ULTIMATE MARVEL vs CAPCOM3 - and will feature 12 new fighters, 8 new levels of play and other sweet bells and whistles, they only announced 4 official fighters:

Marvel's
  • Ghost Rider
  • Hawkeye
Capcom's
  • Firebrand
  • Strider
(Anger... fading...)

But, it was also leaked (accidentally, on purpose) a few days earlier, that the entire newly expended roster (which includes all the previous 38 characters - thus bringing the new total to 50) would include...
Capcom’s
  • Frank West
  • Nemesis
  • Vergil
  • Phoenix Wright

and Marvel’s

  • Iron Fist
  • Nova
  • Rocket Raccoon

and...
DOCTOR STRANGE

Official Capcom artwork.
If he looks like this in the game, I only have ONE nit to pick...
the gold embroidered area on his cowl is supposed to be at the back of the cowl
and at the base of his shoulders, leading down and around the outside border of the cloak.
It does NOT go around the edge of the cowl. Recent artists (Joe Quesada) had made that mistake in recent years and it keeps coming back...
(anger... rising...)

Doctor Strange can FINALLY put the virtual beat-down on many of his top-tier nemeses...
DORMAMMU, DR. DOOM and SHUMA GORATH...

(Anger...fading...)

So, while it is sad (and annoying!) that I purchased the deluxe version of Marvel vs Capcom 3 only a few scant months ago (as blogged about [HERE]) I feel it is "worth" it to finally have Doctor Strange as a playable character in this game (as opposed to just making a lame cameo appearance, like he did in the prior release, along with other blog favorites like MAN-THING).
And at a mere $39.99, it's not all that bad.

(Anger...gone.)

Add to the fact that there are still some free bonus swag to get if I preorder.
Unfortunately, there are different "costume packs" that can only be obtained by pre-ordering, and each pack is available from different retailers....

(Aaaagghhhh... Anger... RISING..)

Good thing I'll be able to pull out the HAND of HOGGOTH to put the smack down on whomever pisses me off!
Now WHERE's my Congressman...?

I NEED to PUNCH Something... NOW!
Marvel vs Capcom3 : Fate of Two Worlds
Quite possibly the GREATEST fighting game ever?

---

* UPDATED *
02-18-2011
More pics, videos and spoilers (labeled)!
---

After a month of waiting, a package arrived at my doorstep (ok, my P.O. Box) and inside was a treasure trove of awesomeness - presenting pleasures, both immediate and promised.

The Limited Collector's Edition of MARVEL vs CAPCOM 3 : Fate of Two Worlds video game!
(I bought the one for the PS3)

With a bonus of an exclusive, Limited Edition SHUMA GORATH "Waste of Flesh" t-shirt (designed by Meat Bun, as I blogged about [HERE] - scroll down to the 01-15-2011 update near the bottom.)

HE WHO SLEEPS BUT SHALL LP, LP, LEFT, HK, HP, UP, UP, DOWN, UP

Available for PS3 and XBOX360, the limited collector’s edition for MvC3 costs $69.99, only $10 more than the standard game, and comes with some sweet extras to delight comic book fans.

Here is what the set includes:

  • Steelbook case featuring exclusive art work.
  • 12-page prologue comic/art book, written by Marvel writer Frank Tieri, plus campaign art and a selection of fan art.
  • A one-month subscription to Marvel Digital Comics.

 and the very BEST part...

  • 2 DLC Characters – Shuma Gorath and Jill Valentine in her Resident Evil 5 battlesuit.
Unfortunately, the DLC characters won't be available until MARCH 15, 2011!
So... I need to WAIT in order to put together my three-character team of:
  • DOCTOR DOOM
  • DORMAMMU
  • SHUMA GORATH

Totally.

Freaking.
Awesome!

Oh, how insane is THAT gonna be?
Three of my all-time favorite baddies, all available for me to control them in order to bring pain to anyone foolish enough to cross me?
Bwa-ha-ha-ha!!!
er.... sorry. Got carried away there.

Here are some screen grabs of SHUMA GORATH (and Jill) the first two DLC characters (and also some DORMAMMU as well).

In Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Shuma-Gorath only appears as a downloadable character, but his moves are as deadly as ever. To send your opponent into a world of dizzying madness, enact his “Chaos Dimension” attack.

“Shuma-Gorath grabs you with his tongue, wraps himself around you, and slides you into a nightmarish portal. It’s spinning, hallucinatory and gives you a taste of what’s going on in the Chaos Dimension, which is where he hails from. And then he spits you out.”
  - so sayeth Seth Killian, Capcom’s special advisor to the game, describing the move.

Check out the pic of THAT!

Now it DOES suck that Shuma Gorath isn't a regular, included character in the game.
Seriously, Shuma Gorath has been featured in video games before - including previous incarnations of this game:
- Marvel Super Heroes
- Marvel SuperHeroes vs Street Fighter
- Marvel vs Capcom2
so why dump him down to the level of DLC?
Instead, reserve that "honor" for more highly desirable characters.
Let's face it, if you're not a huge fan of the Doctor Strange mythos, you probably won't care about Shuma and won't want to have to pay to get him.
But I'm SURE there are other entities that fans would gladly (?) pony up the cash to score.

Still, where Capcom taketh (sorta) they also giveth:
While Doctor Doom is an old veteran of video games, and even Shuma Gorath has appeared in earlier epics, never before has DORMAMMU been seen in a video game, and here he is in full fighting fury!
(as I blogged about months ago [HERE])

Check out the sweet visuals of Dormammu incinerating his opponents!

But you think THAT would be enough to make me squee over the prospect of playing?
Maybe... but no.

Also confirmed are a multitude of other cool CAMEO appearances by many characters near and dear to my heart:
  • BLADE
  • SATANA
  • IRON FIST
  • MEPHISTO
  • SATANNISH
  • GHOST RIDER
  • SILVER SURFER
 And... oh yeah, that's right...

DOCTOR STRANGE!
and
MAN-THING!

Oh, yeah bitches!
While Man-Thing is rumored to appear in the background of some fight scene, Doctor Strange has been CONFIRMED as being seen in "one of the characters ending scenes" (reference found [HERE]).
While it would be far, far better to see Doctor Strange as a playable character, I am glad to see that he is not totally forgotten in this epic.
Especially fitting seeing as how at least two of his deadliest foes (3 if you count Dr. Doom) are prominently featured.

“Every character in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has their own unique ending. That’s something we worked very closely on with Capcom. And Dr. Strange will appear in one of the character’s endings.”
 - promises Chris Baker, manager of licensed games at Marvel Entertainment.

* SPOILER ALERT:
Through a quick web-search, I have uncovered which character's ending, complete with screen-grab, where Doctor Strange appears.
If you WANT to be SPOILED... look for the RED TEXT at the END of this post and then keep scrolling to the very bottom.

---
*IMPORTANT TIME-SENSITIVE NEWS*
You can VOTE for what characters you'd like to be included (as DLC's I'd imagine) via the CAPCOM website - [HERE]
But voting polls CLOSE FEB. 19TH AT MIDNIGHT PST.
You can vote for 3, 4 or 5 characters, so after you read this post... go vote for DOCTOR STRANGE and two to four others.
 ---

Now if THAT isn't enough to get my amygdala humming, what else does this game bring to the table?

  • Evolved VS. Fighting System: Wild over-the-top gameplay complete with signature aerial combos, hyper combos and other original systems. The evolved new battle system, the “Team Aerial Combo” takes the exciting mind-reading game to a whole new level!
  • 3-on-3 Tag Team Fighting: Players build their own perfect team as you assign unique Assist Attacks for each character and utilize each character’s special moves to create their own unique fighting style.

GAH!!!
There's only one problem (well... TWO really) with my getting to play this game.

I'll readily admit, that I'm not much of a video game player.
Oh, I WANT to play.
A LOT!

However, grand aspirations aside... I should fess up to the fact that I don't really have the skillz to pull off the multi-button combos required in today's electronic gamefare.

I feel like I'm standing up in some 12-step group meeting for the woefully pitiful game player.
"Hello. My name is Ptor and I am a button-masher."
"Hi, Ptor."

Well, as it turns out, my most recent acquisition feels my pain and Capcom has seemingly designed a game with me in mind. Most early reviews state that this game is designed for the two opposite ends of the gaming spectrum; the super-pro and the button-masher (and not really anyone in-between).

Supposedly, the seizure-inducing multi-combos, while monstrously effective for the advanced player are still dazzlingly awe-inspiring and able to be pulled off by neophytes such as myself.
All to dizzying, pleasure-center throbbing results.

So, I am excited!
Finally, a game where I can do as much damage to my video-game expert younger brother as he does to me.

The main problem?
Well... (he admits sheepishly)... I don't even HAVE the console required to play this game.

Admittedly, I bought it because of the multiple characters included (and the sweet Shuma Gorath shirt) with the foreknowledge that I'll have to either go visit my brother to play or wait for him to come to me - his PS3 game console in tow.

But, those instances will be few and far between (sadly, because I like my brother and enjoy seeing him - as well as desiring to punish him mercilessly with the unmitigated fury of DOOM, DORMAMMU and GORATH!). Also, upsetting because, the DLC can only be downloaded once, and it will forever be accessible ONLY from my bro's game console.

I need to get me a PS3 - stat!
Just as soon as one falls from the sky... or is available cheap.
I've been holding my own with a sporadic stream of freelance jobs (and am in training for another full-time/ part-time job) but funds for frivolous items like video game consoles isn't easy to come by.
;-(

Alas, I am a, as SHUMA GORATH would say (in play)...
"WASTE OF FLESH!"

* SPOILER of which Character's ending where DR. STRANGE appears*

Hsien-Ko
Hsien-Ko and her sister, Mei-Ling, seek the assistance of Dr. Strange to help free their mother from the spirit world, and maybe even return the two of them to human form.

I am unsure if this is animated in any way or is merely a static scene with only scrolling text.
If this is the sum total of Strange's appearance(s), I will be a bit disappointed, but still glad that he wasn't totally left out.

For a list of ALL (or nearly all) -over 40 more- other cameos they can be found at the following link. [HERE]

...And now a word from DOOM!
Episode IV

.

Dr Doom once more takes a moment from his busy schedule of planning world domination to impart one word of his magnificent wisdom upon us all.

What shall he say today? *

"Prostitute!"

Sadly, DOOM reveals his inner shame at being reduced to a "BRAND" and shows but a SMALL sample of the merchandise that bears the name and visage of... DOOM!

Those are but a sample of the MANY Dr Doom related articles in my collection, and those two are up for sale on the ol' ebay account - as of this posting (but they'll be gone before too long).

Unfortunately, already having been sold off in month's past are a few other Dr. Doom related items. The most awesome of which was the full-sized Bowen Designs statue (Doom standing atop his castle turret).

(click to make LATVERIAN in size)

as seen in this old "sales pitch post" [HERE]

Yup... Doom IS a megalomaniac, and I guess as such, he expects to have his likeness on many household items...
Check out a previous "Word from DOOM" post to see some others:
A figural MUG as well as a fictional Latverian NOG.
That post [HERE]

But still, it must shame him slightly that such items are being made for mere money and not to further his glory.

...And now a word from DOOM!
Episode III

-

Yet again, Dr Doom takes a moment from his busy schedule of planning world domination to impart one word of his magnificent wisdom upon us all.

What shall he say today?

"NOG!"

--- And now a Commercial Announcement ---

This post brought to you by...

LATVERIAN DOOMSTADT NOG

The ONLY NOG approved by DOOM!

---

- That NOG label could be the worst bit of "Design" I've ever done. Hastily done or not.
If it were an ACTUAL product, it wouldn't be so busy, but as a one-shot prop, it has to have a bunch of elements that might not normally be required. Or at least - laid out better.
But, I'd imagine DOOM's ego being so rampant that ALL Latverian product must require his "seal" of approval upon them, and that seal should take up 1/3 of the top portion of the package and/or label.

- Hmmm... speaking of shoddy-looking... Castle Doom is looking a tad shabby there. Draperies all mussed up and junk.
You'd think that there would be constant clean-up and tidying crews of Doombots (or serfs) who would tend to these things, what with the constant invasions and battles.

Episode II

Once again, Dr Doom takes a moment from his busy schedule of planning world domination to impart one word of his magnificent wisdom upon us all.

What shall he say today?

"SNUGGIE!" *

- This is wrong on EVERY level. **

...And now a word from DOOM!
Episode 1

Dr Doom takes a moment from his busy schedule of planning world domination to impart one word of his magnificent wisdom upon us all.

What shall he say today?

"BAH!"
(humbug!) *

-personally, I like how the credits are longer than the actual vid.
* (and that DOOM feels above the limitations of the "one word" restrictions, thus getting two words in via guile)

MYSTIC GARB : DR. STRANGE APPAREL
- part 1 : CAPS and TIES

Welcome to the first of a series of posts that will seek to catalogue my extensive collection of Doctor Strange (and related 6-Dimensions characters) apparel!

This is a series that I have been meaning to do since DAY ONE on this blog.
Seriously, every time I wanted to get to this series, something would preempt its inclusion.

New Years, spring-time, summer, even "Fashion week" came and went and still I missed the opportunities. So now, the week before Halloween, I feel I might be able to justify this series as a showcase of Marvel apparel that, theoretically, could be seen somewhat as "costume" wear.

LAST YEAR, I showcased all of the official Doctor Strange costumes by Ben Cooper (post found [HERE]), so I thought that this year I'd use this series as a take on the "lazy trick-or-treater's" easy way out.

Think about it, those old Ben Cooper Halloween costumes were just plastic smocks with the name and picture of the character on the chest. If you were lucky, there was a mask. So, who's to say that t-shirts, baseball caps and other apparel couldn't be acceptable?

OK. Preamble complete, I'll try to keep the verbiage to a minimum and just let the pictures tell their thousand words.

And as usual, click on pics to make "Supreme" sized!

-------------

First up, possibly one of the RAREST of the RARE items in the Doctor Strange collector's wish-list. This could be seen as the "crown jewel" - ironically enough.

The DOCTOR STRANGE Baseball Cap!
Shown here in its protective crystal sarcophagus...
ok, it's just a plastic hat case.

Produced circa 1994, this was to be one of a series of the Marvel caps, produced by AMERICAN NEEDLE, that were released for sale from 1993 - 1994.
However, while several other character hats were released officially, the Doctor Strange cap never hit store shelves.

Allow me to remove the cap from its plastic case to show it to you in greater detail.
And ONE detail is very important indeed: looking at this next photo, you'll note the word: "SAMPLE" stamped on the underside of the brim.

This was a production sample, perhaps what would have been the final product, or perhaps not.
We'll never know since the Dr. Strange cap was never released to market.

There's no way to know for certain how many of these production samples survived, or even how many there were to begin with.
All I know is that it took me several years to track down.

I DO have another character cap; DR. DOOM - that I purchased when it was originally for sale - and which I'll also showcase here today. DOOM was one of the first hats to be officially released.
Doom shall not be contained!

However, I'll get to the Doom cap in a moment.
Let's get back to STRANGE!

A purple cap with red accents, it also features embroidered artwork and a logo for Dr. Strange.

The embroidered artwork here is taken from the artwork of Ron Lim from the cover of Doctor Strange - Sorcerer Supreme # 25.

The logo chosen was the one that originated during Dr. Strange's first official series (the one that spun off of his run in STRANGE TALES), and was also resurrected during the 1980's-1990's "Sorcerer Supreme" title, as you could see in that previously shown issue's cover..

In my many years of searching this is the only Dr. Strange cap that I have found.
It's never been worn and looks much better in real life - the photos simply don't do it justice.

---------

Back to DR. DOOM; I had purchased this, ordering it directly via the PREVIEWS catalogue while I was working in a comic shoppe at the time.
Like many of the ancillary items in my collection, this was purchased on the hope that if enough people supported a fledgling product line, eventually they would get to release a Doctor Strange version of the item.

Thinking that the line would last longer than the few months that it did, I intended to order a second Dr. Doom cap since I actually WORE this one quite a bit.
Sadly, the line was discontinued before I had the chance.

Featuring embroidered art - the front is based upon John Byrne 's artwork.

while the side panel is based on classic Jack Kirby artwork.

The logo is taken from the most excellent:
DOCTOR STRANGE / DR DOOM : TRIUMPH & TORMENT original graphic novel.

*UPDATE*
04-30-2013

While I won’t wear my one 1-of-a-kind Doctor Strange cap, that doesn’t mean that I couldn’t wear a 2nd “1-of-a-kind” Doctor Strange cap.
And thus, I had sewed onto a new baseball cap, assorted Doctor Strange PATCHES, to make a special edition just for me.

I’m not much of a baseball cap wearer. I have one for the Pittsburgh Pirates, but that’s primarily for the big golden “P” in the front. “P” is for PTOR. I couldn’t care less about any particular team. Not since I was a kid (and my two faves were the NY Mets – and, coincidentally, the PA Pirates). But I wanted a hat that spoke of what I like – what type of mojo works for me.

Well, this, while a bit garish, is it.

The third eye sits atop my brow.
All without serious meditation or soul-searching.

Doctor Strange heads/busts on either side & the made-for-TV movie logo at the back.
While I do wish that the heads were smaller, their placement - set further back - and the curve of the cloak’s high-collar frame the logo in the back quite well.

With the Eye of Agamotto up front, twin “Doctor Strange” heads set back on either side, and the “Dr. Strange” logo from the 1970’s TV movie around back, this hat shows that I've always got Doctor Strange "on my mind".

Incidentally, I am nearly 100% sure that the maker of these patches (a seller from Argentina) used one of MY uploaded pics of the title screen for the movie logo as visual data for the patch-making machine; which makes this patch yet another of my little unintentional offerings to the world-at-large (as I detailed in this post [HERE]).

*END UPDATE*

----------

Let's move down from head wear to neck wear, and show two neckties that feature Dr. Strange and Dr. Doom.

This one, produced in the mid-late 1990's is a montage of assorted Marvel characters.
Obviously, Dr. Strange is well represented - by the artwork of Marshall Rogers.
Fine silk - made in Italy.
Produced exclusively for the "Tie Rack".

And then there is this tie of Dr. Doom with artwork by Steve Rude.

Produced by Ralph Marlin and released in 1996.

There was supposed to be a Dr. Strange neck tie released in the mid 1960's available from the various Marvelmania ads that were shown in the early issues of some Marvel comics.
In 20 years of my active searching, I have never found even the slightest hint that such an item was ever released to market. Sadly, many Dr. Strange items that are solicited never garner enough interest to reach production.

Come back tomorrow for the 2nd installment of this series:
