What's On The Other Side...

I had hoped to have my in-depth review of New Avengers # 5 up today, but alas, real-world responsibilities (and the post's growing size) prevented that from coming to pass.

However, all is not lost, as this entry really should be made first anyway (and, I was looking to have made this post several days ago, anyway... so, really, I've just shunted the whole publication schedule a little).

The reason for this post needing to come first is that it shows (and I will also be linking back to it form my NA # 5 review) what is to come after the events of that issue, thus helping me in some of my theories.

So, here is what we can expect in a month or so.

And just for the sake of tradition, I'll pull up this hoary old image to create the mood:

So, it is by only a small surprise that by issue 4, the shit really hits the fan with the appearance of Shuma Gorath; "He who sleeps but shall awaken".

Last seen being defeated (off-panel) by Doctor Strange in the "KNIGHTS 4" series (issues 25-27) the ancient evil has again returned.

I have long believed that this is ALL part of a mystical war undercurrent that has been brewing for years (I won't go into it again, but it revolves around a bunch of teaser stories from several years ago, wherein such events as we're seeing now in New Avengers were foretold to be coming).
With events like the Chaos War, the New Mutants in Limbo, Vampires in X-Men and much much more... the Marvel Universe is looking very "magical" as of late.

So, perhaps.
Just perhaps... the baddie behind it all in New Avengers will ultimately be shown to be someone like Shuma Gorath, or one of his emissaries.

As for the New Avengers and Doctor Strange and Doctor Voodoo, we'll see them in the next issue of New Avengers (# 6) but it looks like one -or both- of them might not be the same

Notice how Voodoo has his face all in shadow? And Strange's face is HALF shadowed?

After the events of New Avengers, Doc is outed with the rest of the Illuminati and will have to deal with the mess of the Infinity Gems in the pages of the next arc of (adjectiveless - "classic") AVENGERS, starting with # 8.

Because, by the very next issue, Doc is supposedly channeling the evil ZOM energies that he absorbed from 'World War Hulk' - and which started the whole mess of his losing the title of Sorcerer Supreme.

So, if Marvel truly DOES co-ordinate things during their editorial retreats, and it's not just naked slip-n-slide contests, with Quesada and crew butt-sliding across beer-fountain slides of all of our hard-earned money, then perhaps this is a well-woven tapestry, leading to something...

But what that might be... Doc becoming a "ronin"-type sorcerer, masterless and beholden to no one... or slowly ascending to his former place as Earth's Sorcerer Supreme... I have no idea.

All that is for sure is that Doctor Strange isn't being killed off... yet.

News from San Diego ComicCon 2010.

While I am still in the middle of my relocation I have been trying to keep on top of the news related to this obsession...er... hobby of mine - and the various characters that warm my heart's cockles.

Here's what news is new from the SDCC (San Diego ComiCon) as found on the CBR site [HERE]:

DOCTOR STRANGE
(and the ILLUMINATI):

"Illuminati will show up in Avengers #7," Bendis said, "they will be outed to the world for doing something even worse than they did last time."

Great.
Instead of trying to redeem what could have been an interesting secret society of super-heroes, instead they are continued to be portrayed as bumbling, incompetents and guilty of screwing up prety much everything they set their hand to.

Truthfully, when first revealed several years back, I kinda liked the concept of the Illuminati... a little.
I took offense at their portrayal from their first appearance, but only because they were being used to set up several massive blunders (Planet/ World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, perhaps parts of the Beyonder's SECRET WARS II stuff..., etc...), but the basic kernel of the idea really popped for me.

Instead of a cool, conspiracy-oriented bunch of stories of mystery and intrigue, we'll continue to get the 6 STOOGES (Yes. "6 Stooges"... even the 3 Stooges weren't just the 3 Stooges. There were Larry, Moe, Curly, Shemp, Ted Healy, Joe Besser, Curly Joe DeRita, Emil Sitka...).

*Sigh*
Why can't I have nice things?

No word what will happen to DR. STRANGE (or DR. VOODOO) after this mess currently going on in NEW AVENGERS.

ROM - SPACEKNIGHT:

In keeping with his promise of wanting to work with ROM SPACEKNIGHT (as first blogged back in April of 2009 - HERE), Brian Michael Bendis seems to be following through.

When asked about the character, Bendis said "you will see [Rom] Space Knight show up in a future Avengers story."

Unfortunately, but necessary due to legalities, that will mean a redesign of ROM's armor (unless they have him appear in human form, as he has in the past), they won't be able to actually call him by name (ROM), and BENDIS - while seemingly into the character, will undoubtedly have "Space Knight" speaking in a pattern unrecognizable to ROM and fans of the character.

For all of us who have wanted to see a return of ROM, this will most likely fall into the category of: "Beware what you wish for... you just might get it."

Still, if they can find a way to make it work, there is a hint that ROM will be featured in the next AVENGERS title.

Lanning asked, "Who would be interested in a 'Cosmic Avengers' book?" Lots of applause.

Will there still be an ongoing cosmic title after "Thanos Imperative?" "Stay tuned," McCann said.

So... with the DIRE WRAITHS still running around (as seen in recent issues of FANTASTIC FOUR and DARKSTAR and the WINTER GUARD), having ROM resurface was inevitable.

I'm staying tuned.

MAN-THING
(And Marvel HORROR):

Will more horror characters come back? Several: "Yes."

"Satana will be showing up in the upcoming 'Women of Marvel' digital miniseries," Horwitz said.

I know Son of Satan (Damien Hellstrom) is featuring pretty largely recently (New Avengers being the most recent starring profile), and he and his sister SATANA will both be getting BOWEN mini-busts soon as well.

With her appearances here and there over the past few years, SATANA is ready for a return.

As for MAN-THING, no mention that I could find, but he's been doing well thus far in THUNDERBOLTS, so... if that's all he gets lately, it's all good.

(Although, the looooong-awaited Man-Thing graphic novel, written by former Man-Thing scribe; Steve Gerber - penned before his death, and illustrated by Kevin Nowlan - has been hinted at a release in the near future. Whether it remains in graphic novel format or is broken into a mini-series is anyone's guess.)

ASSORTED:

Marvel has announced a STRANGE TALES II, follow-up anthology mini-series, since the previous one (with all independent / underground comic creators) proved itself to be a hit.

While DOC was featured in the previous series', aside from the usage of his original comic's title, there's no telling if he will appear in this next foray.

But for MORE info on this series, with specific creators and plans mentioned, check out the story being updated on CBR [HERE].

Voodoo, Villains, Valkyrie & Visible Astral Forms - NEW TOYS!An "IDOL PURSUITS" post

Y'know... while I was going thru my "Sanctum collection" looking at all the cool swag (hoping that I won't have to sell it all off one day soon) I made a vow that some of the things that I absolutely WILL KEEP are some of the various action figures of my favorite characters.

They're small enough to be kept on a bookshelf or computer desk, portable and fairly impervious to harm - should I need to toss them in a box for awhile for any reason.

But also, they're also a relatively inexpensive way to have 3-dimensional representations of my comic-book faves in my possession.

But, I also knew that it would be something that I could keep up with (barring any exclusive and/or unreleased bullshit like the BLACK BOLT figure that was to have come out last year).


I STILL need this one to finish my "ILLUMINATI" set.
It was only available in Canada and the Singapore, but has FINALLY made it to the USA.
Now, I just have to FIND one.

However, a few NEW pieces of MARVEL plastic love were unveiled by HASBRO at the 2009 SDCC (San Diego ComicCon) recently.
A few of which have been in the works for a few years, and two which were on my mind a lot as of late...

Allow me to showcase those select FEW items here, as they relate to my "6-dimensions" philosophy.

First up is...

BRO-DOC VOODOO!

Whether you call him BROTHER VOODOO or DOCTOR VOODOO he is still a very cool character - one long held in a good place in my head and heart - and LONG overdue for a figure.
This is to be a MARVEL LEGENDS figure (single packed) as far as I can tell.
While I know that the new 3.5 inch Marvel Universe figures are all the rage as of late, I still like my action figures to be a bit bigger. The 6 inch Legends figures more than fit that bill.

Another new "Legend" (and he is EVERYWHERE in the comics the past few years) is...

The HOOD!

It must have been a no-brainer to have him (and Voodoo) made into figures this year, with the whole "Next Socrerer Supreme" storyline going on in the New Avengers title.
Aside from that, HOOD has been in practically every Marvel title for the past few years, and his exposure is only getting MORE extreme.

However, it makes me wonder WHY there is no DORMAMMU figure to be released.
THAT seems like it should be a done deal.
He would make a great build-a-figure", but Hasbro has stated that they have stopped the B.A.F. program, due to budgetary constraints.

One other figure to be released (and one that had been rumored for several years) is...

VALKYRIE!

Arguably THE most steadfast member of the DEFENDERS (actually being in more issues than any of the founding 4 members), she is to be released later this year.
(Not to jinx the deal, but it is also rumored that NIGHTHAWK is to be made into a figure not too long thereafter.)

There are also to be versions of Nighthawk and Gargoyle, along with Hulk and Silver Surfer to be released in the next year as a 4-piece set entitled; "Super Teams: The Defenders"as a part of the booming "Super Hero Squad" series.

Speaking of the SUPER HERO SQUAD figures, at long last the
"Secret Invasion Begins - Illuminati" set is to be released this year.

Skrull Soldier, Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Dr. Strange (Astral Form)

Does this mean I have to go get the Black Bolt S.H.Squad figure?
(I already have Namor)

Primarily, I'm only truly interested in the Astral Form figure of Doctor Strange, but if I DO see a Black Bolt (and maybe Gladiator version of Hulk) I may seek to complete that set.
The Astral Doc is just a redo of his previously released "regular" Squad figure, just molded in clear blueish plastic.

One thing I DO know is quite cool is the new PLAYSETS that are being released.

How is this NOT fabulous?

Hopefully, there will be a bit more substance to it, but even still... it's pretty neat.

Now, if things go well enough, and Doctor Strange regains the title of Sorcerer Supreme in some big crossover "event", how awesome would it be to have a playset of the Sanctum Sanctorum?
