High Quality garments - also available in ORGANIC materials - with durable printing that won't fade or crack after washing!

These are not some quick-print, low-quality "Cafepress" style shirts.
It took MANY, many months of researching various printers, print shoppes and silk screen companies, brick-and-mortor as well as online, before I committed to joining forces with one whose product quality, pricing and infrastructure proved themselves to be of merit.

I originally had the idea for the "NO MORE..." line when 'House of M" was released... in 2006 !
But there simply were no readily available companies that could do what I required at that time.
Over the years, I would seek out newer companies, but none satisfied my every need or criteria.

As I was making my research, and fairly sure that I had finally found a good company, I worked up my artwork in 2010 and I sent my designs and ordered some actual product for myself to test out in actual wearing and washing conditions before I would even think of agreeing to sell anything.
I won't just slap crap together to make a buck. My moral outlook overpowers any desire for profit.
(Which is why I am not rich.)

Ensured of a safe, secure, reliable store site, with fair prices and excellent shipping - I am ready to open my virtual doors to the world, assured that all product will be produced with only the best quality and delivered direct to YOU!

Also for YOU : GREAT PRICES!
From $19.99 tees -to- $35.99 hooded sweatshirts!
Something for everyone's budget, depending on your desires.

And, as readers of this blog may know, since as of late I have no time to be counted on to handle multitudes of orders myself, my new partners provide an AWESOME customer service team, available to assist you with any question. And RETURNS and/or EXCHANGES available with NO HASSLES!

I told you, I'm not a cash-grab kind of guy. I have always refused to put my name, time or energy behind anything that I don't believe in, and have, in my life, turned down lucrative deals because they were sleezy or just out to make a buck.

ORIGINAL COMIC ART FOR SALE!
- The FIRST Batch -
THOR, WOLVERINE, BATMAN - ROBIN
DAREDEVIL, SHE-HULK, SPAWN

---

As some readers of this blog may recall, I was, for a few years, a card-carrying, paid, professional comic-book writer and artist. This was primarily back around 1988 to 1992.

During that time, in addition to the actual comic books that I was hired to create (for some small indie publishers), I also would frequent many comic conventions (comic cons) in the U.S. (primarily New York City, Long Island NY, Boston, Chicago and Pittsburgh, among others).

While attending the conventions, I had my own table in the "Artist's Alley" and would take commissions for original artwork, and also sell hand-colored, framed art prints.

Although drawn in pencil, I may have been a little ahead of my time, in that I knew that if I drew the pieces tight enough, that they could be reproduced without the need for inking.

Now, after more than 20 years, due to financial circumstances, I am selling these original pieces - some of which were used to make the black and white prints that I would then hand-color for sale.

Up on eBay, I have just listed the first batch - 6 assorted pieces - and at the insanely low starting price of only 99cents!

These first 6 include:
THOR, SHE-HULK, DAREDEVIL, BATMAN & ROBIN, SPAWN, and... WOLVERINE.

The link for the eBay auctions can be found [HERE] or at the eBay button on the right sidebar.

* click on images to see them in greater detail *
(but the scans do NOT do the artwork any justice. Trust me. The originals are much nicer.)

THOR
1989

Graphite pencil over blue-line pencil drawing
14 x 17 vellum finish bristol board
full bleed image

Taking advantage of the fact that his own movie has just opened, I am making THOR the lead item in this sale.

In this image, THOR is wearing a full suit of mystical armor and sporting a full beard.
This was drawn to pay tribute to the time when his title was written and drawn by Walt Simonson, who introduced those elements to the character.
One of the most critically acclaimed runs in the character's history.

The THOR auction can be found [HERE]

---

SHE-HULK
1990

Graphite pencil over blue-line pencil drawing
14 x 17 vellum finish bristol board
10 X 13 image

Cousin of the HULK (she received a blood transfusion from him - which also transferred his powers to her), the SHE-HULK has been "Savage", "Sensational" but always "Sexy" and ready for fun!

SHE-HULK auction can be found [HERE]

---

DAREDEVIL
1989

Graphite pencil over blue-line pencil drawing
8.5 x 14 vellum finish bristol board
8.5 X 11 image

Perched atop an ornate brownstone rooftop in New York City, DAREDEVIL keeps watch to protect the citizens from any evil that would befall them.

The DAREDEVIL auction can be found [HERE]

---

Oh, and in case you don't think I show any love for the DC side of the street...

BATMAN and ROBIN
1991

Graphite pencil over blue-line pencil drawing
14 x 17 vellum finish bristol board
10 X 13 image

Swinging out over the rooftops of Gotham City, the Dynamic Duo are ever-ready to combat the criminal element.

The BAT-auction can be found [HERE]

---

And now, to highlight an "indie" property (if IMAGE can be seen as "independent")...

SPAWN
with ANGELA and VIOLATOR
1993

Graphite pencil over blue-line pencil drawing
9 x 12 vellum finish bristol board
8.5 X 11 image

Cursed by Hell and Abandoned by Heaven, SPAWN (aka Al Simmons) is forever trapped between both realms and must constantly battle the forces of both.

I conceived of the flip-image of the hour-glass to show that he is trapped and doomed by both sides of the veil.
Weep for him, for he shall never know peace.

You can bid on the SPAWN artwork [HERE]

---

And, of course, no "team" is complete without this next guy...

WOLVERINE
"STICK IT"
1991

Graphite pencil over blue-line pencil drawing
9 x 12 vellum finish bristol board
8.5 X 11 image

The ferocious mutant known as WOLVERINE is known for his rough and ready attitude - but his friends can also attest to a sense of humor as well.
Popping out a single (middle) claw (with a finger behind it), here he displays both!

Dig your claws into the Wolverine artwork [HERE]

---

These are merely the first of several batches.
I aim to list one batch per week (starting and ending on Sunday evenings).
However, I will be listing them, in advance, on my art blog - in case anyone feels that they want to inquire about prices or just want to make an offer, and thus avoid the whole eBay rigmarole.

Upcoming drawings are of:

- ANGEL
- BATMAN
- CAPTAIN AMERICA
- CONAN
- DR. DOOM
- FANTASTIC FOUR
- GHOST RIDERS (Johnny Blaze vs Dan Ketch)
- GREEN ARROW
- GREEN LANTERN CORPS
- HULK (grey) -vs- RHINO, JUGGERNAUT and ABOMINATION
- INHUMANS
- INVADERS (Captain America, Namor, Human Torch I, Toro, Bucky)
- IRON MAN (large image)
- IRON MAN (8.5 x 11 image)
- JOKER
- J.L.A (the Bwa-ha-ha roster)
- J.S.A
- MOON KNIGHT
- NAMOR; the SUB-MARINER
- NIGHTCRAWLER
- PUNISHER
- SILVER SURFER
- SPIDER-MAN
- SUPERMAN
- TEEN TITANS
- WOLVERINE (crossed claws)
- WOLVERINE vs BATMAN
- WOLVERINE vs FAUST
- X-MEN (Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Havok, Rogue, Dazzler & Psylocke [in her original body and costume])

Like the assortment available this week, some are good, some are awesome!

Remember, the link for the eBay auctions can be found [HERE] or at the eBay button on the right sidebar.

THIS MAN... THIS MANTLO!
-or-
BID EARLY AND OFTEN!

Hello Art lovers, comic fans, and collector-enthusiasts of all ages...

I am here (after a few weeks of personal limbo - which I'll get to another time) to hawk the original artworks that are up for sale / auction over at the fund-raising event known as SPACENITE2 that Floating World Comics is holding to raise money for the medical bills of long-time comics writer, BILL MANTLO!
The link to Floating World's site is HERE - so you can preview the artworks in all their glory.
Their eBay auction link for the artworks can be found HERE.

As you may recall from my last post(s) -linked to [HERE] - I have a piece in the auction as well.
I submitted a finalized digitally inked Black and White piece of artwork which they are selling as a high quality, archival print.

MY piece is featured on their site [HERE] .
And the AUCTION for my piece is HERE.

For your convenience, I'll post a pic of the piece at the end of the post.

Now, remember, only ONE of each artist's work will be available.
Some are original works, in a variety of styles and media... some, like mine, are prints (since many artists work digitally there IS no "original").

The auctions end between December 26th and Dec 30th (depending on which images you're interested in).
So you have to bid early and OFTEN to make sure that you secure the one(s) that you want!

And also, (and most importantly) give some much needed funds to help pay for the continued medical care of a man who believed in the better aspects of humanity, and wrote about them in his many comics stories... and then... when he LEFT comics behind (or more accurately, comics left him behind) he became a legal defense attorney for those who had neither voice nor funds to pay for an expensive legal team to help them in their hour of need.

Bill Mantlo put his beliefs up front where he could use them to do good.
A real life super hero.

But, after being struck by a hit-and-run driver, he was left in a serious state of incapacitation, permanent brain damage and physical trauma. He will never be the same man again... on the outside.
But within him still exists the heart and soul of a fighting hero.

Please, be his hero now.

Bid early and often and while you get a sweet piece of artwork (AND a justly deserved feeling of do-goodery), Bill Mantlo gets to know that his words meant something to us all.

---

You don't have to bid on MY piece (but I'd appreciate it if you did)... but here is the blue-line artwork (before digital inks were applied).

Click to make "Galadorian" in size.

original work is
11" x 17" in blue pencil

ROM : SPACEKNIGHT Illustration
- FINAL IMAGE -
For the Spacenite2 Bill Mantlo Fundraiser

*UPDATED*
- see "*" near end of post

Hey all,

Well, I actually DID get to finish the ROM artwork for the Bill Mantlo benefit (that I mentioned last post - HERE) , but it wasn't until this past weekend that I actually had more than a moment to do so.

Luckily, Jason from Floating World comics (the awesome people hosting the Bill Mantlo fundraiser - linkee HERE) told me that late submissions were still accepted.

I just need a few more moments to transform my blue-line artwork into "digital inks" in photoshop, but alas... time is not my friend.
(* See crazy story at end of this post)

But, without further ado... here is the image that I managed to work up.

Click to make "Galadorian" in size.

original work is
11" x 17" in blue pencil
Artwork by yours truly - PTOR

I had wanted to actually INK and/or digitally color the piece, but time... that fickle mistress likes to kick me.

It's a busy piece, showcasing nearly all of ROM SPACEKNIGHT's foes!
From left to right, top to bottom are;

  • Female WitchWraith
  • The "Dweller on the Threshold"
  • The "Most High One"
  • DeathWing
  • Another female WitchWraith
  • A "Thornoid" plant
  • A WatchWraith android
  • A Hell-Hound (in phantom form - in Rom's grip)
  • A Male Wraith
  • The Horror known as; HYBRID
  • Another Hell-Hound (in Phantom form, with the Doberman dog form it morphs from at its feet)
  • Another "Thornoid" (tangling ROM's arm and legs with its tendrils)
  • Another Male Wraith (getting blasted into Limbo)
  • Another Male Wraith (who is. Freaking. Out!)

And of course, ROM; SPACEKNIGHT in the center of it all.

I'll transform this into digital inks and submit the file, and in the meanwhile, will try to find time to actually INK it, so that it'll be a completed piece for the auction.

*UPDATE*
- Well, I DID digitally ink the piece just in time to send in this submission.
I tweaked the consistency of shade, dropped it into Black And White and "inked" it as a nice finished image.
I won't post that one.
Not yet anyway.
I'll give the Spacenite2 event time to do so first for their fundraiser.
I'm just happy I was able to participate and help in some small way.
*END UPDATE*

Maybe, when I have time, I'll colorize it.

So, let me know what you think.

----------------

*Crazy story found here:

So, as it turns out, with all the craziness of my life, I managed to finish the artwork and drove to Staples to get it scanned in on their oversized printers, but got into a car wreck on the way.

My car was "totaled" but I did manage to get to Staples to get the job done.

Then I tried to post this last night but my laptop seems to have some kind of virus or something and wont boot up, so I had to wait until now to quickly type this as I try to squeeze a few seconds out of another crazy day.

But... it COULD be worse.

Bizarre Bazaar
-or-
Yup... More Swag for Sale!

Yowza! Yowza!

Before we get cranking on the good features to be found in the coming week here on ye olde blog, it's time for another "commercial announcement".

Once again we here at the Sanctum have tossed some collectible goodies up on eBay.

*UPDATE NOTE:
While many items sold, others did not.
So, if you missed out on them this go-round, I'll be relisting them soon with some other cool stuff.
If you want to bypass the whole eBay thing entirely, drop me a line.
email addy :
sanctum(dot)blog(at)gmail(dot)com.
:END NOTE *

I'll post a list of the items below.

There are a very few "auction" format sales this time around, focusing instead on the store-type of "Buy-It-Now", so it's "First-come, First-served".

First, the linky to the sales is below:

My items on eBay

(which can also be found on the sidebar - a little under my photo)

By the way, I don't know what the heck kind of code they write for those things, but when it takes you to the ebay sales page, it scrambles all the listings out of order.
My crack team worked very hard to arrange the listings in a specific order (grouping similar items together) and then ebay just screws it all up.

So, if you are interested, make sure to scroll through all the listings...
*** OR BETTER YET, click the "TIME LEFT" option at the top of the listings. That will reorganize them by how much time is remaining in the sales, and put them in their proper order.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

We ship Worldwide and try to combine shipping costs whenever possible.

*Update Note: As items sell off, I 'll mark them accordingly*

MAGICAL TREASURES!

While it may sound like the sales-pitch of a cereal-selling Leprechaun; "MAGICAL TREASURES" are indeed up for sale!

*UPDATE NOTE:
While most items sold, others did not.
So, if you missed out on them the first go-round, I'll be relisting them soon.
If you want to bypass the whole eBay thing entirely, drop me a line.
email addy :
sanctum(dot)blog(at)gmail(dot)com.
:END NOTE *

Once again we here at the Sanctum have tossed some great collectible goodies up on eBay, some are from the outskirts of my own personal collection (items that I was going to add to my own "Sanctum Sanctorum"), but have decided that they would be better served in others' hands (and the cash, in mine).

We've passed on the "auction" format this time around, focusing instead on the store-type of "Buy-It-Now", so it's "First-come, First-served".
There are one or two auctions, but most are straight-up "Stuff for Sale!"

First, the linky to the sales is below:

My items on eBay

(which can also be found on the sidebar - a little under my photo)
We ship Worldwide and try to combine shipping costs whenever possible.

*Update Note: Items are ALREADY selling off! - I've marked them accordingly*

Stuff from many of the first waves of MARVEL SUPER HERO SQUAD figures:
  • ANT MAN (loose but never removed from package -&- Very Hard to Find) - sold!
  • INVISIBLE WOMAN & DR DOOM (crazy rare)
  • HUMAN TORCH and the SILVER SURFER (insanely rare)
  • THING and NAMOR (pretty darn rare) - sold!
  • HULK and WASP (rare)

as well as MARVEL LEGENDS figures:
  • BLACK BOLT - Mint in Pack (super rare)
  • DR. DOOM - Mint in Pack (ultra rare from the Fantastic Four / Ronan BAF series) - sold!
  • PSYLOCKE - Mint in Pack (Foreign Variant)
  • LONGSHOT - Mint in Pack

LOOSE Marvel Legends figures:
  • BARON ZEMO - sold!
  • DEATHLOK - sold!
  • LUKE CAGE - POWER MAN - sold!
  • FALCON complete with Redwing - sold!
  • HANK PYM - YELLOWJACKET - sold!
  • MOLE MAN (really rare) - sold
  • Marvel Legends FACE-OFF DAREDEVIL figure (really hard to find) - sold!

Also 12inch MARVEL ICON figure:
  • DR. DOOM - MiP

and more!

If these don't float your boat, don't worry...
since I can't seem to find worthwhile employment, I vow to have stuff up there every week or two!

However, since unemployment laws state that I could lose my benefits if I even lift a finger to perform anything even remotely resembling "work" (whether it pays or not) while I am searching for a job, I have been letting my wife take care of all the sales aspects to this endeavor.

With a 30+ year collection, there's bound to be something to suit everyone's tastes:
Posters, Out of Print Trade Paperbacks, Graphic novels, books, toys, action figures, t-shirts, promotional materials and swag, and more - oh, yeah... tons of comics too... she's devoted to becoming "Sanctum Sanctorum Comix" the super-seller store!

Oh, and look for original artwork soon as well.
I'll be showcasing some of those here soon (gotta scan a bunch today).

Thanks for any support!

Your pal,

...And now a word from DOOM!
Episode IV

.

Dr Doom once more takes a moment from his busy schedule of planning world domination to impart one word of his magnificent wisdom upon us all.

What shall he say today? *

"Prostitute!"

Sadly, DOOM reveals his inner shame at being reduced to a "BRAND" and shows but a SMALL sample of the merchandise that bears the name and visage of... DOOM!

Those are but a sample of the MANY Dr Doom related articles in my collection, and those two are up for sale on the ol' ebay account - as of this posting (but they'll be gone before too long).

Unfortunately, already having been sold off in month's past are a few other Dr. Doom related items. The most awesome of which was the full-sized Bowen Designs statue (Doom standing atop his castle turret).

(click to make LATVERIAN in size)

as seen in this old "sales pitch post" [HERE]

Yup... Doom IS a megalomaniac, and I guess as such, he expects to have his likeness on many household items...
Check out a previous "Word from DOOM" post to see some others:
A figural MUG as well as a fictional Latverian NOG.
That post [HERE]

But still, it must shame him slightly that such items are being made for mere money and not to further his glory.

...and the days dwindle down...

"September Song" is one of my favorite tunes.
Doesn't make any difference who sings it, I've heard them all.
Everyone from Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Durante, and Willie Nelson
to Lou Reed, Jeff Lynne (E.L.O) and Ian McColloch (Echo & the Bunnymen).

It always comes to mind this time of year, and serves to remind me that time is not my friend.

Sadly, I've been out of synch with time the past few weeks (at the very least).
Not the least of reasons because early September always maintains a very full schedule for me.
The first week of September has my mother's birthday, and my wife's is the very next day.
There are also a few personal milestones to celebrate, not the least of which is my Wedding Anniversary.

Not that this isn't enough, but with my unemployment, I've been really digging into the "warehouse" to post stuff for eBay auctions (2 weeks of which, I was too busy to even MENTION here - which is sad, because some sweet goodies are up there. There's still a day left on the latest batch. It's not too late to hop into the auctions UP FOR SALE on the eBay).

On top of all that, we were searching for a "new" used vehicle to replace the ones that died on us several months back.
Happily, we just purchased a van (wanted for several reasons; we need a 2nd vehicle so I can better look for work, my wife prefers a larger vehicle when the snowy season hits, and a van is handy in case we need a larger vehicle to move stuff out of our home... if these tough times make it come to that), but, of course, not without incident.

The long and the short of it all is to say that somewhere, with all of this going on (and much more that I won't bother you with) I have run myself down to a frazzled nub of my former self.

One GOOD thing... the first day with the new vehicle, I drove into town and found the new "Marvel Legends 'Nemesis' figures" and scored my BLACK BOLT (as mentioned [HERE]).
So... at the very least, my action figure collection is complete (for now - at least until Brother/Doctor Voodoo & The Hood are released - also mentioned [HERE]).

However, action figure goodness aside, the past week has had me feeling like crap, yet only for the past 2 days have I actually been able to stop. And do nothing.
I need the rest, or else I'll have a serious illness on my hands.

So, I DO wish to catalogue some goodies here, and discuss some recent events, but I'm just too tired.

Let's hope that I won't be out of commission too long (hopefully not "from May to December").

Titans Three & more!
This week's Auctions!
An Idol Pursuits / 6-Dimensions of Dr. Strange entry.

While busily working, scanning in some (hopefully) truly cool items, for a big upcoming blog post, it came time for yet another batch of collector's items to leave my possession to go
UP FOR SALE on the eBay!.

So, allow me the opportunity to showcase a few items that WERE a part of my collection, but are now, available to YOU
(auctions ending Sunday, 08-23-09).

As with ALL of my posts, clicking pics make them larger for easier viewing.

First up... a trio of some items that I bought new in 1996 - 1997:

Marvel Comic Book Heroes
Pewter statuettes.

Limited edition, Pewter statues highlighting characters from the
GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE ages of comics.

---------

GOLDEN Age:
NAMOR the SUB-MARINER

In nifty windowed display box, complete with replica comic of a 1940's era issue.

(Certificate of Authenticity)

---
BRONZE Age:
The Incredible HULK

(Complete with Certificate of Authenticity)
and a crazy-low production number:
N - 046

---

SILVER* er...BRONZE Age:
The SILVER SURFER
* Seriously, how stupid was it for them NOT to have made
the SILVER Surfer as a SILVER Age item?
I mean, REALLY?

(The Surfer has been bequeathed to a very close friend who is a big Surfer fan and thus, is not available.)

---

The reason I even HAVE these three statuettes is that when they were released (1996 - 1997), the line was in it's infancy, and I was hoping that if there was enough support for the product, that eventually DOCTOR STRANGE would receive similar treatment.

Yet one in a long line of such pie-in-the-sky hopes wherein I put my money on the line for a dream.

Sadly, the line was eventually discontinued and these items vanished into the realm of rare collectible.

Still, these three ARE indeed founding members of the DEFENDERS.
Ostensibly, starting the line-up by first forming as the TITANS THREE in two issues of NAMOR's old mag (Sub-Mariner 35 & 36).
It was their earlier teaming, that led Namor to suggest these fellow heroes as allies when Dr. Strange first sought to form the team that would be known as the Defenders.

---

However, fret not, I put a Dr. Strange item up for auction as well. If for no other reason than to make the Defenders motif complete (in MY mind, anyway).

Marvel Legends DR STRANGE figure
mint in pack.

---

Let's see... what else did I have added to the auctions?
Ah... as I started digging out old Action Figures to go up for sale in the next few weeks, I came across the

X-MEN : Evolution
NIGHTCRAWLER
mint-on-card

Truthfully, there really is no true tie for why this was in my collection.
I DO have a few Nightcrawler figures, purchased over the years, but that is merely because he (and Cyclops) has always been my favorite X-Man.
There IS a small link between Nightcrawler and Doctor Strange, but mostly stemming from Uncanny X-Men Annual # 4, where the X-Men have Strange guide them into a replica of Dante's Inferno to rescue Kurt Wagner's soul from Margali Szardos.

However, this incarnation of Nightcrawler is from the fairly well done animated series; X-Men Evolution. All in all, not a bad series, really, and a hip, teen-age looking version of my favorite blue mutant.

That's about it for this week.
There are a LOT more items being prepped for next week.

---

OH, I guess I'll plug a few non-comic items that are up there as well:

Woodstock - Yasgur's Farm - A Day In The Garden
Frisbees!

These are items that my wife obtained when she was working as an organizer at one of the concerts being held 10 years ago, during the 30th Anniversary of Woodstock, being held on Max Yasgur's farm (the site of the Original Woodstock festival).
We were living fairly close by to the site at the time.

These were only available AT the 30th Anniversary concerts on the Yasgur's Farm site.
To that end, they are indeed a small piece of Woodstock history, of a sort.

There are a bunch of them up for sale (or Best Offer). They're not on auction. Just a straight up deal.

So, celebrate the 40th Anniversary with your very own (because I can guarantee you, we're not holding onto these for another ten years).

Yes... there IS a Dr. Strange link there too, but I'll get to the Woodstock / Strange stuff eventually.
(It's more a Haight Ashbury link anyway, but Woodstock does factor in as well.)

---------

Thanks for indulging my sales pitch here.

Those are the items up for auction this week.
Remember, the link for eBay sales is on the right side of the blog on the sidebar.
But what the heck...for your convenience
HERE is the link to these eBay auctions.

I'll have the next installment (featuring some interesting Dr Strange goodness) on the blog as soon as I can scan all the original artwork in.

Original Artwork? Hmmmmmmmm...... curious.

STARMAN Stuff for Sale!
An Idol Pursuits - 6-Dimensions of Dr. Strange entry.

.
Alrighty!
As promised yesterday, I am going to showcase a few items that not only have much to do with my "6-Dimensions of Dr. Strange" mentality but also are UP FOR SALE on the eBay!

* UPDATE *
THESE AUCTIONS HAVE ENDED.
Spectacularly, I might add.
Thanks to all who participated!

(But read this post anyway. It's got some nice info and sweet pics of the items in question.
Face it... due to the unfortunate rarity of these items, you'll probably never see some of these in real life, so soak in the goodness here.)
*END UPDATE*

This time around, we hop the company fence to graze in DC COMICS' back yard.

The object of my affection?

STARMAN!

Not just any Starman, but the awesome JACK KNIGHT Starman.

(And don't worry. I'll be SURE to fill you in on just HOW Starman is "related" to Dr. Strange before the end of this post.)

Created by James Robinson and Tony Harris, I started reading the exploits of the Jack Knight Starman as DC's "ZERO HOUR" craziness was going down.
This was what... 1994... right?
Damn.

I was working at the aforementioned (in other posts on this blog) BonMark Books in East Meadow, NY (a lovely antiquarian bookshoppe / comic shoppe that has since gone away) and was getting my monthly fix of 4-colored goodness via a sweet employee discount. Because of that discount, I was more than willing to buy tons of comics that I otherwise would have little interest.
Thus Green Lantern and multiple other "Zero Hour" titles caught my fancy.

But ONE new title emerged from the wreckage of DC's then-newest "reset button" with ALL of my attention firmly gripped:

STARMAN!

My interest in the character was, at first, purely one of nerd interest.
Y'see, Jack was a collector of cool items of every sort.
Art books, Hawaiian shirts, old prints, toys, gum machine premiums, tin toys, etc...
Basically, he was "me".

If DOCTOR STRANGE was the "mental & spiritual me", then STARMAN was the "physical & collector-minded me".

Add to the fact that there was a striking resemblance... a tousled black mane, goatee (ghotee?), a penchant for weird print "Hawaiian" type bowling-shirts, a black leather jacket AND I wore goggles like that for awhile in lieu of standard sunglasses (the "wraparound" conforming nature of the goggles helped ease my eyes from my then-allergies to pollen and whatnot).

(If I can dig out a pic from that time, I'll post it here)

Yup.
Starman was "the shit".

Then, my interest in the comic grew into artistic awe, as Tony Harris began getting his vibe on for the art chores and Robinson's story grew and expanded upon it's own mythology.
As both a writer and illustrator, I couldn't help but be impressed with the work being done.
Wondrous stuff indeed.

To the point that I bought EVERY ISSUE of EVERY comic title wherein Jack Knight or ANY of his supporting characters made appearances.
Yup.
I've got 'em all
(and will, sadly, be selling EVERY ONE of them off - sooner or later. Probably in a HUGE "complete set" type of haul)!

However, this post isn't about the comics.
This is about the SWAG!

Because of my collector's mania, I bought whatever product came out concerning Jack Knight.

And HERE, I will showcase them for you.

-------------

First up is a SWEET piece of rare collectible goodness...

The STARMAN BADGE!

I was going to leave this item for last, but it's too cool NOT to post FIRST!
I mean just LOOK at this thing!
It is awesome!

2 inches in diameter, and so shiny and cool... one of DC's very first "Prop Replica" type items, (long before they actually DID such things).
Made in 1997 !

The Jack Knight STARMAN wore this item on the front lapel of his leather jacket.

The basic story was; while getting "dressed" to go out for a patrol / battle, Jack was looking for SOMETHING that would be a "symbol" for his status as "super-hero" (without getting all spandex).
In his assortment of tin toys / bubblegum premiums was a Sheriff's badge.
With a STAR motif, and a "law keeper" angle, it seemed perfect!

I'll confess that I desperately wanted to wear mine, but had long before learned my lesson against actually WEARING items that I collected. SOME people can do that without worry, but I had a bad history of losing my cherished swag, so I never took this out of the jewel case.

Instead, I kept it proudly on display for a while (in a sealed glass display case - away from any light or sun, natch) until my wife and I made our first move. Then, it lay packed safely away, along with the other "non-Dr. Strange" items. Not to see the light of day for several years - until now.

These things are so INCREDIBLY RARE... just type "Starman Badge" in a web-search and see how many people would seemingly give their arms and/or legs for this thing!

They NEVER show up for sales or auctions!
Such is the power of it's coolness.
When you HAVE ONE... only hell or death can make you part with it.
And now... due to my own situation, it is up on the auction block (
endingended SUNDAY, JULY 26 2009).

-------------

The NEXT item is a similar (and equally rare) one:
The STARMAN CLOISONNE' Enamel PIN!

Ba-ZAM!

A little over 1.5 inches wide and made of Cloisonne' enamel baked onto a base-metal pin, this Zodiac / Astrological design is what Starman wore emblazoned upon the back of his leather jacket.

The central STAR design worked along with the "stars" angle of the astrology chart.
Wheels within wheels, man.

Anyway, much like the BADGE, I resisted wearing this item and never removed it from it's protective jewel case.

This item, from 1999, is so rare that it almost doesn't register AT ALL on web-searches.
Only the most die-hard fan had ever seen one or was lucky enough to score one.

But now... my loss is YOUR GAIN!
Get bidding quick, before it's gone!

( *Update* : It's gone.)

-------------

Next up:

The STARMAN STATUE!

Yessir, this was a sweet "get".
I can't quite explain the coolness of this piece.
Aside from the overall design (based on Tony Harris' work), it just oozes "attitude" and "cool".
It's a superhero statue that you don't have to feel self-conscious about displaying in your office (if any of you DO ever feel self conscious about things like that - I never did, but miles may vary).
Dressed in his street-clothes "uniform", this is just a sweet piece of sculpture and design that everyone can appreciate.

Every detail from the golden "cosmic rod" (and just what comic geek doesn't love that little euphemism) to the goggles and the Zodiac / Astrological design on his jacket is perfect.

I had it on display in that sealed glass display case, but soon had to store it back in it's box, because my assorted Dr. Strange collection really needed that valuable real-estate.

So, now... it's but one of the items up for auction this week (
endingended SUNDAY, JULY 26 2009).

-------------

The last item on the block is probably the most "common"...

The STARMAN Action figure!

Look. It's a STARMAN Action Figure!
What other reason did I need for getting it?!?

The Cosmic Rod has a little diode light bulb in it that lights up and glows when the rod is held in both of Starman's hands.

C'mon! How is that NOT cool?
If you're surprised this never got out of it's plastic coffin... (I'm always one to bust these things out to play), it's only because I bought TWO.
I still have one loose (and will be keeping it if I have anything to say about it).

Well... those are the items up for auction this week.
Remember, the link for eBay sales is on the right side of the blog on the sidebar.
But what the heck...for your convenience
HERE is the link to these eBay auctions.

-------------

Now, BEFORE I GO...
I would be remiss in my blogger duties if I did not fill you in on one of the cool little tidbits of "6-Degrees"
(aka; "6-Dimensions") that separate STARMAN and DR. STRANGE.

Well... actually, in their case, it's only 1-Degree!

Back in 1996 a little event transpired that shook the comic-book fanbase to it's core...
That "Event" was MARVEL -VS- DC / DC -VS- MARVEL.

Starting off with a 4 issue cross-company mini-series, the event pitted many of the heroes and villains from each company against each other in various fights.
A select handful of these battles were to have their outcome dictated by "votes" from the readers (mail-in votes, iirc - which means that a popularity contest is the ONLY reason that Wolverine could possibly have defeated LOBO. But, I digress).

However, not all of the meetings were voted on, or even became "featured" in the books.

In issue # 1 we see that two heroes meet and do not fight.
Instead, they (as the caption read): "...have risen above our differences. United by a spirit of learning."

Those two learned, and enlightened heroes?
DOCTOR STRANGE & STARMAN.

That one panel made me buy the whole damned mini-series.
Alas, no further appearances by either of these two, but we DID get the LIVING TRIBUNAL...

The ramifications from the inter-universal crossover was that they would then merge and find that characters from across the dimensional divide would combine with their counterparts.
So, similar characters would merge to become a whole NEW entity.
(i.e.; Wolverine and Batman would become "DarkClaw")

Thus was the "Amalgam Comics" line and universe born.

Anyway, from this mess came the awesomeness that was...

DOCTOR STRANGEFATE.

Dr. Strange meets Dr. Fate
(written about previously on the blog [HERE])

See?
It's ALL Connected!

OK.
That's all for me today.

Feel free to visit the eBay auctions and bid early and often.
(And hey... if anyone is interested in EVERY SINGLE APPEARANCE of JACK KNIGHT STARMAN - and his cast of characters... let me know. I'll compile a list of everything and we can talk.)

Be good, people!
And keep looking to the STARS!
