STRANGE for CHANGE!

In keeping with the
Inauguration Day festivities / cultural zeitgeist...

STRANGE for CHANGE!
********************* ----- *********************

Yes. That's me.
(although my hand is hiding much of my meticulously kempt goatee)

Image from my laptop's camera (with comic-art filter on) - the "original" now being used on the sidebar.

No. I didn't alter the photo (y'know... except for the background "window" & comic-filter & Obamification * ... aside from that I didn't alter the pic.).

OK.
A few more... because by tomorrow, all this posterization jazz will be "so 5-minutes ago".

From a photo of my own EYE of AGAMOTTO amulet.
It's a home-made bit of sculpture that I made, along with the rest of the outfit, back in 1987 or 1988.
The eyeball glows in the dark, and the thing is SOLID. It could kill if used as a weapon.
Not that I would. It's all about PEACE here in the Sanctum.

Here's a bunch more...

Looks a little like Cheney there.

I would SO vote for ROM! You look at that image and tell me it doesn't fill your soul with HOPE.

Alright, Last one...

Like the Snows of Kamar-Taj

It MUST be magic that keeps those stepping-stones clear from snow.
I clear a path and within five minutes it's as if I didn't do a thing!
art from Doctor Strange : Sorcerer Supreme # 84
Mark Buckingham; pencils, Kev Sutherland; inks, Kevin Somers; colors

The winter snows have been hitting here, at my Sanctum, fairly harshly the past few days, and I've spent much of my time dealing with that (and then recuperating from said activity).

As such, I've only had scant few moments to further prepare for my next planned deluxe-entry posts (intended as a precisely organized sequence in which one will segue directly to the other and so on)...

Rest assured, blog entries will resume shortly... as long as the snows allow.

Werewolves and Vampires and Man-Thing... Oh MY!

While I'm readying the next big blog-entry (some good stuff coming)... I thought that you'd all appreciate THIS.

The acclaimed creative team behind MARVEL ZOMBIES 3 returns…with another adventure that takes place in the Marvel U! The vampire. The witch. The werewolf. The muck-monster. The devil. They're nobody's idea of heroes, but they're all that stands between our world and an unstoppable apocalypse! They're the new Midnight Sons, and their quest to track down the undead who escaped from A.R.M.O.R. will lead them around the globe—and right to a cruise ship overrun with undead undersea-dwelling cannibals! Can this monstrous team stop the "red tide" before it unleashes untold horror upon the mainland? Not if the Merc With Only a Mouth has anything to say about it! Yes, writer Fred Van Lente and artist Kev Walker—the guys who made IGN.com say “MARVEL ZOMBIES 3 may actually rank as the best in the series”—are back again, unleashing the flesh-eaters for another roller coaster ride of gore, action, gore, thrills, gore and gore!
32 PGS./Parental Advisory…$3.99

Morbius leads a strike force team of MONSTERS against the invading hoards of ZOMBIES!

That's about as high concept as it has to be. With writer Fred Van Lente and art by Kev Walker in charge again, it's a good bet that it'll rock. As I wrote in my review of the last series (HERE), I enjoyed the story overall, with it's many nice touches. It wasn't perfect, but it was a damn big bit of fun.

With Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, Son of Satan & Jennifer Kale rounding out the team this time around...
This RETURN of the MIDNIGHT SONS is eagerly awaited here in the Sanctum Sanctorum.

COMING in APRIL to a NEXUS of All REALITIES near YOU!

Master of the Picnic Arts?

File this one under "Collector-Level : INSANE"...

As I was returning my Marvel Calendars * to their proper place on the "paper-goods" shelf of my collection within the Sanctum Sanctorum, I had to slide THIS item over, lest it get crushed.

Seeing it, I realized that something utterly ridiculous like this would be a great item to showcase next on the blog.

I present to you a Marvel Comics "PARTY TABLE COVER"!

*click all images to cast a spell of "enbiggenment" upon them.*

Produced in 01995 by Hallmark Cards for their 'PARTY EXPRESS' line.

Fabulous.
But WHY is it in MY collection?

Take a look at the flip-side...

Still don't see it?
OK. Here's a CLOSE-UP.

Behind that image of Thor you'll see THREE panels featuring DOCTOR STRANGE!

If those panels and poses (and dialogue) seem familiar... they should.
As any Doc-fan worth his salt will tell you, they originate in the classic;
Strange Tales # 127.
Which along with issue # 126; featured Dr. Strange's first battle with Dormammu.

Written by Stan Lee. Art by Steve Ditko.

The story behind it's acquisition is a testament to my die-hard collector's insanity.

Back then, I was holding down two jobs (one was as Art director - and Art books department head for a small Antiquarian book and comics shoppe). The second gig was as an artist for a company that painted murals for businesses and private homes.

One day, I was part of a team sent to paint a mural for a Party store.
While walking through the aisles my eye caught a glimpse of the familiar webbed bootie (his boot, not his butt) of Spider-Man.

Walking over, I saw several party supply items featuring Marvel characters.
To any rabid fan collector-monkey, what happens next is a familiar series of events;

My pulse began to quicken, my eye growing sharper, looking for any slight sign of the object of my obsession.

After looking at all the assorted goodies; plates, napkins, party hats and favors, I saw no sign of Dr. Strange (or any of my other sources-for-mania).
Just as I was about to go back to my work, I saw the paper tablecloth.

It was shrink-wrapped in clear plastic so all I could see was the front and back (despite my desperate attempt to peer into the sides) of the item.

But, within a fraction of a second, I spied that tiny one-tone reproduction of the Master of the Mystic Arts.

SOLD!

"The Quest" leads me to some strange places, and even when I'm not actively on "The Quest", I am always at the ready.

---

As a bonus, for the curious, here are pics of the item partially unfolded.

This isn't the entire table cover (which measures 54" x 89 1/4" or 1.37m x 2.26m for our metric friends) , but it is this series of artwork that is repeated constantly all over the item.

The LOGOS are what comprise the main body of the table cover. And the comic-art is the border that runs along the sides.

Featuring artwork by modern Marvel artists, like Jim Lee, Art Adams, Gary Frank, John Byrne, Mark Bagley, and others superimposed over a background of classic Marvel comic panels by such masters as Ditko and Jack Kirby, this paper table cloth, would have been a hit at any kiddie comic-fan's party!

Trust me. There's LOTS more "stupid shit" like this in my collection.
And hopefully, you'll get to see all of it in time.
;-)

CURSE ME FOR A NOVICE!

I'm trying to alter my blogger template to a customized one...
but can't seem to get it to work properly.

My logo header has vanished and no matter what I try, I can't seem to get it back.

Argh!
Well, all the CONTENT is still here, so that's good (for all of us). Feel free to search around the blog and read. Nothing important is lost (except for my beautiful logo).

All I can say is...

Doctor Strange ; Master of the Mystic Arts # 17
Englehart, Colan and Palmer

Curse me for an HTML novice!

**UPDATE**
Feh! No matter what I tried, the 3-column format would not accept my logo header.
I may have to alter the size...

In the meanwhile, I've resumed my classic format.
All's well for now.

Thanks for your patience.

Time Warp :
Part III - The Occult World of
Doctor Strange Calendar

TIME...
It rules us all. It counts our moments, our days, our years... our... lives.
Such is the nature of mortality.
We can try to ignore it's passing. However, it can can not be denied.

Take this last installment; this third entry in the series (of three) posts about the old MARVEL CALENDARS...
With one day skipped over, one 48-hour period, between the previous installment and this... for those who were eagerly anticipating its being posted, it must have felt longer.
(Of course, for those who had little care about it, time held them not in it's power. All I can say is that for ME it felt interminable).

However, the wait is over. I proudly present Part III in the "Time Warp" series...
- 01980 -
- The Occult World of Doctor Strange Calendar -

(Part I : the "CLASSIC" calendar series can be seen - HERE)
(Part II : the "MODERN" calendar series can be seen - HERE)

As a Doctor Strange "fan-site", and one that showcases the many wondrous Doctor Strange-related collectibles from within my Sanctum Sanctorum, I felt it appropriate to leave this single calendar for last.
As such, I am pleased to show each and every image from this item, which as I'll relate at the end of the post - was a very important part of my early years as a fervent collector of Dr. Strange comics and ephemera.

However, time's a wasting... let's go back in time... to 01980 * !

To do this, we'll take a lesson from 'The Master'... one to whom TIME was less than nothing...
The ANCIENT ONE...

Strange Tales # 124 - Stan Lee & Steve Ditko

We are limited in our time, only the length of a single candle-wick, and as such, I'll keep my comments to a minimum.
Instead, I'll let the fabulous works speak for themselves.

Click on images to cast an enlarging spell upon them.

-------------

Back in the mists of time... 1980 through the rest of the decade, in the dim recesses of history when there was no internet... as a collector and fan, informational resources to aid in the search... the QUEST... for the back-issue tidbits and eclectica were few and far between.

As a young fan, hooked on comics and the worlds of Doctor Strange, but with only a few then-recent comics to my name, I would utilize the clues and reprinted images within this calendar (and the others of the "Classic" series) to piece together plot-points and time-lines of Strange's publishing history.

Many times I had only a single panel (or cropped portion of a panel), two-color reprinting of a scene from a critical piece of Strange's adventures with which to cobble together events and use as reference material to help FIND the issues represented within.
The tricky part was that many times, the scenes within the calendar were not from any actual Doctor Strange titled comic.

I'd buy some old comics, with giant gaps between issues, and use the information from the editorial boxes (those little boxes at the bottom of comic panels which explained where characters and events had occurred previously - those were invaluable to me) and my calendar to connect the dots, and aid me in my next leg of... The Quest!

Of course, I couldn't very well take this giant calendar with me to the assorted darkened back-alley comic shoppes that were beginning to crop up from the late 1970's.
No. I'd be risking the "structural integrity" of the calendar (and myself) by being so outre with my nerditity.

Instead, I used my almost photographic memory (which only works for visuals - not numbers, sadly) to scan comics while flipping through them quickly. Searching for familiar scenes or characters who might be continuing a story, speed-reading captions and word balloons for salient key-words that might point me in the right direction of a worthwhile purchase.
Bridging a gap in a storyline. Filling a hole in the collection. That need drove me onward for many years. With little but this calendar as my guide.
(Over the years, my original copy took a few bits of stress, causing me to retire it from active use and purchase a second, new, mint copy. It is the newer version that I used for my pics for this entry.)

The subtle feeling of success, when I was able to locate a comic which held a scene that was reprinted in this calendar, was like a small shot of adrenaline which would be my fuel to go onto the next acquisition. And the next. And the next.

Until many years later, now... in the present... where I have every appearance of Doctor Strange.
All his comics, guest appearances, cameos and even where he's a single head in a crowd scene.

Some prized pieces that were obtained, weren't even comics at all.
One such item, as shown in a tiny box at the bottom of one month... was an issue of Esquire magazine, where 1960's college hippies are interviewed about Dr. Strange (and Marvel as a whole).

That mania... that focus... was brought into being by using this calendar as my lodestone... my map... to go back to the PAST - finding the treasures I needed - and bringing them back with me...
to the PRESENT.

Much like Doctor Strange himself... striving to make his way back from the past... as the light of his guiding candle had long faded away.

And so, I have brought you all BACK safely with me from the past.
From THEN to NOW.

However... how many of you... after reading this and seeing the same tantalizing glimpses of yesteryear, may have left a small portion of their soul behind in the past... and now must journey back to collect it - and the many Doctor Strange appearances found within... along the pages of...
...TIME!

-------------

*There IS a way to trick time...
You see, THIS 1980 calendar was the same day pagination as the past year of 2008, and as such, I used it as my calendar for that year.
2009 is the same day pagination as 1981, so... I can recycle the past for my usage today.
